I enjoyed this story of homesteaders in Norway. Isak walks into the wilderness and starts a small homestead. Then a woman named Inger walks through the area and joins him. They continue to work to expand their farm, raise livestock, and begin a family. Over the years they face many difficulties, but things always seem to work out for their good in the long run. It‘s a calm and steady story of hard work.

I listened to Hamsun‘s book Hunger last year and did not enjoy it all, so I was nervous about starting this one. I‘m almost a third of the way through and appreciating it so much more. I am continually expecting something horrible to happen, but so far even when bad things happen they seem to work themselves out fairly well.

I‘m quite enjoying this tale of Norwegian homesteaders. Possibly my first translation from Norwegian. #1001books

A quality Norwegian family saga, well told. Incidents that would be the height of despair in a Thomas Hardy novel are just a part of life and endured with a stiff upper lip.

The long, long road over the moors and up into the forest - who trod it into being first of all? Man, a human being, the first that came here. There was no path before he came.
