This book is an interesting mix of an older parent trying to find new happiness in the face of loss, family dynamics, immigration (to England), and Ukrainian history. It‘s definitely got some dark humor while also delving into realistic family issues. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This afternoon I made spicy jollof rice with chicken while I listened to the end of this audiobook. I had sympathy for most of the women at some point during the story. I could believe in the beginning that Afi was naive enough to think her situation would change, and in the later part, I appreciated her determination to not just go along with the family‘s expectations. This was absolutely a different cultural experience for me to read about.

Texreader That dish sounds good. Ghana is definitely a different world. 2mo
Daisey @Texreader I had a hard time finding a recipe for Ghana with easily accessible ingredients that also sounded like something I would like, but this turned out great. 2mo

Luthien and I took a longer walk again today and I started listening to this audiobook. I‘m intrigued so far, but can‘t say I‘m optimistic about how the story is going to go for the main character.

Although I still have some reading to do this week, I think I‘ve finished all I‘m going to fit in for #ReadingTheAmericas2023. I completed at least 15 books and experienced more countries through them. 7 of these books are also on the #1001books list. This challenge was a great way to continue to broaden my reading, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I spent a good part of today listening to this murder mystery set in Sweden while working around the house. It‘s the first book of the Wallander series and I can see myself picking up another sometime, although I know I will never make my way through all of them. It is a great winter listen if you want something bleakly realistic rather than cozy.

This was a family saga with magical realism and South American politics. There are stories of love but plenty of violence as well, and it does not end with a very hopeful outlook. I enjoyed the variety of characters in the family.

I thoroughly enjoyed this travelogue describing a Norwegian journalist‘s travels through #Turkmenistan, #Kazakhstan, #Tajikistan, #Kyrgyzstan, and #Uzbekistan. She describes some of the travel itself, basic history, political aspects, culture, and personal stories of people she met.

julieclair I know absolutely nothing about any of these countries. Added to my stack! (edited) 4mo
Daisey @julieclair This book has been on my TBR since I saw it posted for #ReadingAsia2021 for the same reason, but I just fairly recently found the audio and finally got to it. Definitely a worthwhile read! 4mo
BarbaraBB This was so good indeed! 4mo

I listened to the section of this book about Kazakhstan and part of the Tajikistan section this weekend on my walks and continue to find it incredibly interesting. Additionally, I needed an excuse to share this fun up close photo of Luthien enjoying her walk.

This book has been on my TBR since I first saw it reviewed here and in my Audible library for a bit. I finally started listening on a beautiful fall walk with Luthien today and enjoyed the first section on Turkmenistan.

I enjoyed this Ishiguro book more than some of the others of his I‘ve read. It‘s from the perspective of a Japanese father who worked during WWII as an artist promoting the Japanese cause and lost his son in the fighting. In the years following the war, he watches and reflects on the many changes in his city as well as his daughters and the other people around him.
