Some prophecies thwart danger. Others create it. Fans of contemplative, psychologically rich (but no less action-packed) fantasies la Ursula Le Guin will welcome this warm, inventive debut (BCCB, starred review). High in their mountain covens, red witches pray to the Goddess, protecting the Witchlands by throwing the bones and foretelling the future. But its all fake. At least, thats what Ryder thinks. He doubts the witches really deserve their tithesone quarter of all the crops his village can produce. And even if they can predict the future, what danger is there to foretell, now that his peoples old enemy, the Baen, has been defeated? But when a terrifying new magic threatens both his village and the coven, Ryder must confront the beautiful and silent witch who holds all the secrets. Everything hes ever believed about witches, the Baen, magic, and about himself will change when he discovers that the prophecies hes always scornedare about him. Laced with rich, imagined histories; miles of catacombs; and prophecies true and false, Witchlanders takes place in an evocative, tantalizingly vibrant world and raises equally evocative questions: Who gets to defines history? When does a legend become a crutch? And why does the enemy in war look a lot like the hero? Lena Coakleys first novel is a lush, chilling story that is sure to send shivers through your finger bones.

From 18 down to 4. Out of my last stack of books to keep/unhaul these are the 4 that I decided to hang onto at least for a little while. The rest will be sent off to find new homes. This brings my total count of unhauled books for #MarchUnshelfing to 133. Though if you look at my shelves you wouldn‘t be able to tell 🙈 @Clwojick

TheAromaofBooks Wow that's a serious number!! 4y

RainyDayReading @TheAromaofBooks A serious number for serious business haha 🤪 I was actually surprised it was that high. 4y
RainyDayReading @Clwojick Aww thank you! 😊 It feels good to get rid of so many that I know I‘m not going to get to or didn‘t enjoy. Haha you can really only tell with one bookshelf, but I‘ll try to remember to post a picture. 4y

Pickpick

I really enjoyed this story. The landscape descriptions were some of my favorite parts. I really loved all the characters and thought their development through out the story was quiet strong. I love reading books about witches/magic(especially in October), and this is a great one to add to my collection.
