Decelerate Blue | Adam Rapp, Mike Cavallaro

The future waits for no one. In this new world, speed and efficiency are everything, and the populace zooms along in a perpetually stimulated haze. Angela thinks she's the only person in her family—maybe the only person on the planet—who sees anything wrong with this picture. But the truth is she's not alone. Angela finds herself recruited into a resistance movement where the key to rebellion is taking things slow. In their secret underground hideout, they create a life unplugged from the rapid-fire culture outside. Can they free the rest of the world before the powers that be shut down their utopian experiment? From revolutionary and award-winning playwright Adam Rapp and veteran cartoonist and animator Mike Cavallaro comes a dark, breath-taking new vision of an all-too-plausible future for America.

I saw comparisons of this book with The Giver and Fahrenheit 451, and while I can see that, the one it reminded me of the most was M.T. Anderson‘s Feed. The grim future, the language quirks, the characters who have to potential for depth stuck in a superficial world. The art here enhances the story, and I loved the use of color at the end. This is not for everyone, but it felt real on the take that neither side was all that great.

This book was very Fahrenheit 451ish to me in the beginning and then it sort of devolved into a weird cult kind of thing. After reading I still don't know who's meant to be the better side. Maybe the point is there isn't one? I loved this Great Wall of Adjectives as well as a few other illustrations in particular. If you've read it, let me know what you thought!

Really enjoyed this book. It's about slowing down and appreciating life. I hope there's another one after this one.

I really liked this graphic novel. Amazing world building for an interesting dystopia. I want to know more about the culture and how and why it happened.

Mehso-so

I loved the concept and the main character. The ending seemed very rushed to me, but I'm on the fence about whether it was thematic or just hasty writing. I was very impressed that an all male creative team wrote such a cute queer girl romance, but the end felt waaaay too much like a cheap Kill Your Gays trope. I would have loved to see where they could take this concept in a more extended story

Don't drink the Kool Aid!
I hate comparing books to others, but this book is a cross between Fahrenheit 451 and In Praise of Slowness, sprinkled with the love of theater expected from the author. The society portrayed appreciates all things fast—including brief classics, micro-movies, and a lack of modifiers when speaking. Our protagonist is drawn into a resistance; youngsters who want to slow down. Here they take a pill to slow their heart rates.

jpmcwisemorgan This looks like a scene out of the nightmare that was the Jim Jones cult. Don't drink the Koolaid is right. 8y

Started this ARC from NetGalley. The best way to describe it so far is Fahrenheit 451 for the 21st century.
