Operation Shylock
Operation Shylock: A Confession | Philip Roth
7 posts | 9 read | 5 to read
What if a lookalike stranger stole your name, usurped your biography and went around the world pretending to be you? In this tour de force of fact and fiction, Philip Roth meets a man who may or may not be Philip Roth. Because someone with that name has been touring the State of Israel, promoting a bizarre exodus in reverse of the Jews. Roth decides to stop himeven if that means impersonating his impersonator. Suspenseful, hilarious, hugely impassioned, pulsing with intelligence and narrative energy, Operation Shylock is at once a spy story, a political thriller, a meditation on identity, and a confession. Like Pushkin and Dostoevsky before him, Philip Roth takes on the subject of the writers double, which for Roth is inevitably bound up in Jewishness and identity. This is a bold, inventive and energetic departure from his past novels, a meta-novel, and, like all of his writing, full of ideas, wit, humor and startling observation.

1. Faster moving mostly. I get a little restless otherwise.
2. The tagged book is a favorite. The plot is absolutely absurd and certainly unexpected.
@TheSpineView thanks for the inspiration. #two4tuesday
Thanks for brightening my Tuesday with the tag, @BookwormAHN even though my day sped up right afterward so I couldn't get to this until now. Bit late to tag anyone to play today but anyone still up for it, feel free!

BookwormAHN Nice choice 😺 3y

I can see why some people like this book. Roth is very ably churning through questions relating to (for lack of a better term) the Jews place in the world while weaving himself and his doppelgänger about. If the subject matter had been of more interest I think I could have quite enjoyed this one. As it was I found the long monologues a bit of a chore. It definitely feels dated but unquestionably Roth is a very good writer.

Pickpick

I loved this book! One long stretch of mindfuck after mindfuck, and I‘m still not sure what actually happened (“happened”). The only female character exists to be irresistibly hot, so that was lame but whatever. I don‘t read Roth for sensitive portraits of women‘s inner lives.

1.) I‘m with @Ingerella on Clash of the Titans. I loved Buboe the robot owl!

2.) Onion rings, but they have to be gluten free. I‘m also a fan of sweet potato fries.

3.) Right now? Bach‘s 3rd Brandenburg Concerto is playing on the stereo. More generally, classical/baroque/romantic music.

Ingerella I forgot about the owl! I need to watch that movie again! 6y

#OhNoNotYouAgain is what MC Phillip Roth must think when an imposter calling himself 'Phillip Roth' turns up in Israel proclaiming that Jews should leave in favor of resettling in Poland. His reputation on the line, Roth decides to confront doppel-Roth and ends up unearthing a wild conspiracy that must have inspired the opening sentence: "For legal reasons, I have had to alter a number of facts in this book." ?? #marchintooz @Lizpixie @Cinfhen

Cinfhen Love this photo and book sounds interesting even though I‘m not a fan of Phillip Roth 😬 (edited) 7y
Billypar @Cinfhen I like most of what I've read from him- I usually recommend this one or American Pastoral, but I don't think either will convert anyone who isn't a fan of his style. Haven't heard great things about him as a person though. 7y
