The Family Under the Bridge
The Family Under the Bridge | Natalie Savage Carlson

This is the delightfully warm and enjoyable story of an old Parisian named Armand, who relished his solitary life. Children, he said, were like starlings, and one was better off without them. But the children who lived under the bridge recognized a true friend when they met one, even if the friend seemed a trifle unwilling at the start. And it did not take Armand very long to realize that he had gotten himself ready-made family; one that he loved with all his heart, and one for whom he would have to find a better home than the bridge. Armand and the children's adventures around Paris -- complete with gypsies and a Santa Claus -- make a story which children will treasure.

I‘m surprised this book won a Newberry. It was an odd combinations of themes and while set in Paris, it didn‘t feel particularly French.

Pickpick

A hobo and a recently-homeless family become unlikely friends in this winter tale.

This is short and sweet, full of ideas about what family means. There‘s also a bit about how being honest means nothing if you‘re not kind and generous, which I found interesting.

Day 30: I automatically thought of this cover when I saw the prompt #wintrycover. I feel like I can feel the cold of that time by the water under the bridge. 🥶 #auldlangreads

LinesUponAPage That‘s the same illustrator that does the Little House series pictures. I had to double check the book title... lol 5y

The Family Under the Bridge is a fantastic RF novel by Natalie Savage Carlson and illustrated by Garth Williams. This book is a Newbury Honor and would be great for a 3-5 IR. Armand is an old hobo living under a bridge in Paris who has everything he owns in a little cart and has no family. One day, Armand notices a family under his bridge and they begin to care for one another and Armand wants to help the mom and her children out the best he can.

Camrynm The EL strategy I would pair with this RF novel would be 6: Continually monitor students‘ comprehension because the concept of a hobo living under a bridge might be confusing for students. The UDL principle I would use would be 9.1: Promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation, such as context based assignments/projects, so that the students know there will be certain forms of assessment throughout the novel even though it is an IR. 5y
Camrynm This lesson plan is a great discussion guide for grades 3-5 and 6-8 https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/family-under-b...

A sweet, short children‘s book that is perfect for the holiday season. When Armand discovers a homeless family under his bridge, he reluctantly befriends them and allow them to share his space during the Christmas season. He soon becomes attached to them and decides to provide a home for them. I wasn‘t overly thrilled with how the Romani characters were viewed by some people, but it does reflect the unfair ways they have been historically treated.

Mdargusch I love any book illustrated by Garth Williams! 6y
Ericalambbrown @Mdargusch I was just going to say that! I loved the Little House books he illustrated that I grew up with. 6y

An old hobo begrudgingly befriends a homeless family under a bridge in Paris.
A sweet story, I suppose, but not earth-shattering in any way.

It isn't walls and furniture that make a home...It's the family.
