Definitely recommend this book if you're interested in politics.
It's a personal account of the 1960s by Doris and Dick Goodwin through their archives: their role, what they thought at the time, how they looked back on it all.
Doris Goodwin's writing is excellent and intimate.
I hesitate to review this book only because there‘s so many complicated, unusual characters, whose characterization is imbued by the beauty of this VT farming country. It‘s 1969 & Dec.Warren moves to Bethany VT when offered a position with the state police Almost immediately an irascible farmer is found burned to death in his barn. Was suicide? Murder? An accident? As Warren delves into the investigation, assisted by his elderly enigmatic neighbor🔽

The three “disorderly men” of the title are detained in a police raid of a gay bar, charged with disorderly conduct. It is pre-Stonewall, early 1960s NYC when being gay meant a lot of shame, rejection, secrets, and ostracism. We follow the personal stories of each man as their lives eventually intersect. It is a sobering reminder of the cumulative emotional damage that occurs when gay people shoulder the burden of a forced closeted existence.
Read in 2024. There‘s a lot going on in this story: parent abandonment, drug abuse/DV/emotional abuse, jealousy. The story spans over many years. It was a decent story. I really liked Benjamin‘s research that she did about the history of surfing (which I found more interesting & found more books to read).
Ella Fitzgerald is one of my favorite singers. I don‘t know much about Marilyn Monroe, so it was interesting and sad to learn more about her life. I was impressed with how strong Ella was. She stayed away from all alcohol and drugs, in contrast to Marilyn who struggled severely. She stood up for herself professionally and personally, despite race and attractiveness. Both struggled with difficult childhoods, men, and fertility.
I gave this one 50 pages and can‘t convince myself to pick it back up so it‘s a bail for me. I wanted to and should have liked it, based on the summary. But I just couldn‘t do the writing style 😢
