I somehow missed this when it was released. I‘m a big fan of cogman‘s invisible library series. Anyway it‘s 99p on kindle at the minute!

julesG The sequel is due soon. 😉 1w

What a delightful treat this is! Writing that has that easy-breezy lightness of touch that makes your eyes just gobble it up, characters that are hilarious, ludicrous, sometimes hideous, events so ridiculous but also poignant, insightful, devastatingly real - just an utter joy to read! The satire is deliciously arch, the mocking merciless but affectionate & it feels so fresh! Such a rich reading experience - the perfect blend of funny & sad.

tpixie Great to hear!! This last year I read a lot of historical fiction featuring Nancy Mitford, and some of her siblings- and I‘ve been wanting to read this book- and more of her writings. What a very interesting family! 2mo
LeeRHarry I enjoy Nancy Mitford‘s books immensely 🥰 2mo

I‘m loving this book!

It‘s weird and dark but so funny at times … like a gothic Nancy Mitford. 😆

This is maybe a little bit weird. A young maid who resembles someone French and famous is brought to France for a covert operation. That sounds pretty normal. It's French Revolution with vampires.

So funny..and so true.
So all my well read Littens, what are your opinions on the surprisingly dark ending she gives to this book? She doesn't end her other Radlett-Montdore books on a note of such sadness, why do you think she chose this ending for this one?

Ruthiella Maybe because Linda was based on her sister Diana and it was a more palatable fictional outcome than in real life Diana‘s marrying the leader and founder of the British Union of Fascists? 7mo
Vansa @Ruthiella bit of a composite of all the sisters, the Communism was very Jessica and Nancy herself, though the leaving a family was Diana! Possibly, though.Just seems like a very sudden dark turn, maybe because of her own miscarriages? 7mo

It‘s 1793 revolutionary France. The Scarlet Pimpernel with vampires? YESSS.

Eleanor is a British housemaid on a vampire baroness‘s estate. During an evening with guests she‘s told that she‘s Marie Antoinette‘s doppelgänger so off to Paris she goes for a fun romp through alternative history. There was a class system so a lot is mentioned about that societal structure.

Oh, and Eleanor is possessed by a witch. (I ♥️ the S.E. book cover)
