Loved all the stories in this collection—not a clunker in the bunch—but the first one, which gives the book its title, is masterful, a tour-de-force. It‘s an utterly compelling story of a former serial killer in the early stages of Alzheimer‘s. Convinced his daughter‘s boyfriend is a serial killer, he sets out to save her before he completely loses his memory. I understand why Kim has won all the awards & will definitely read more of his work.

Reading a short story collection by an author who has won every major literary award in Korea. The titular story is about a serial killer suffering from memory loss even as there is a mystery he wants to solve—I‘ve just started but it‘s very good so far.

This is so hard to review - there is so much space in here for the reader to create their own understanding - or to get hopelessly lost! I did feel lost at points but also extremely moved by the beauty of the writing, the incredible imagery used to experience one person losing language while another loses vision. Perhaps it is exploring the separateness of human existence, of individual grief and pain, the importance of being seen or heard. 😢

Reggie Oof. Have you ever seen Biutiful with my ex celebrity husband, Javier Bardem? This review‘s sadness reminded me of that movie. 2mo
BarbaraBB What a poignant review 🤍 2mo
CarolynM Why ex, @Reggie? What did the swine do to you?😠😆 Lovely review, by the way Paula😘 (edited) 2mo

Reggie @CarolynM lol, do you remember those ‘20 things about us‘ to better get to know us posts here on Litsy? In the 1st one I said Javier was my celebrity husband and in my 2nd one I said it was Seth Rogan, because sometime I need to laugh-(I can‘t be sad all the time Javier!!!) and I said that because of this movie. But now I‘m single again. And I don‘t watch enough movies to have a celebrity husband. Who‘s yours? 2mo
CarolynM @Reggie I don‘t know about husband - I‘m going for a reverse harem 😉 2mo
Reggie @CarolynM I‘m so glad you said that cause I was about to say that I would settle for affairs/dalliances at my age. Cue-Michael Fasbender, Gael Garcia Bernal, Ryan Gosling, and Gong Yoo. 2mo
batsy @Reggie Yes to Gael Garcia Bernal and Gong Yoo!! Did you watch Squid Game? I've become obsessed with the actor who plays the cop in it (looking for his brother) 😆💘 2mo
batsy Lovely review! I felt the "spareness" of the book, too. Those gaps and the silence of the characters. I love that with reading if it's the right book at the right time, it just makes sense and I think for when I read it, it fit. 2mo
Reggie @batsy I did watch Squid Game, but I came across Gong Yoo in Train to Busan. And yes that detective was handsome. Gael I first saw in Y Tú Mama Tambien and my love solidified for him in La Mala Educacion by Pedro Almodovar. 2mo
batsy @Reggie I love Train to Busan and he was great in it. Y tu mamá también was my intro to Gael, as well. Loved him in Bad Education and also in Amores Perros. 2mo
CarolynM @Reggie 🙌 Go you! 2mo
Megabooks Yes, agree that this was a difficult read. 💜💜 2mo
Centique @Reggie @CarolynM @batsy i am 100% committed to Ryan Gosling as a celebrity husband 😂 (pre the Barbie abs!!) 2mo
Reggie @Centique there was a kid who used to make vines where he‘d try to feed Ryan Gosling cereal. And they were hilarious. Sadly, that kid got bone cancer and died. When Ryan Gosling heard, he filmed himself finally eating cereal in memory of that kid. It was very endearing. 2mo
Centique @Reggie aww i went and looked that up - the vines were great. The poor guy! Did you ever see Gosling in Lars and the Real Girl? I love that movie. 2mo
Reggie I have! I love the part near the end where the mannequins getting her nails done and he talks rude to her so the ladies at the salon hang up for her. And then how he kills get in an accident. lol, loved that movie. 2mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

I‘m here for fiction that explores the darkness of the beauty and wellness industry. “Natural Beauty” additionally delves into cultural identity. The most moving parts of the story for me were with the protagonist and her immigrant parents. The true horror is found in contemplating that these storylines aren‘t implausible… how far are people really willing to go for beauty and power? Who sets the standards? Who pays the price? 🎧

Mehso-so

Hmmmm. Some parts I was engrossed in and thought the writing was beautiful. Other parts I felt detached and couldn‘t wait to get them over with. Han Kang always has unique concepts that I find myself drawn to. Even if I didn‘t thoroughly enjoy it, I still loved that two human beings found each other through loss and mourning.

Started this one a couple of days ago. A woman that has lost her speech and her professor that is losing his vision are drawn to one another. I‘m almost at the halfway point- where the professor‘s interest for the woman is escalating. So far, the writing is moody and atmospheric just like you‘d expect from Han Kang 🖤

#Scarathlon #SpookyGhostClub @Clwojick

This book mixes horror with speculative fiction while presenting thoughtful social commentary about the beauty industry and the lengths people go to in order to be deemed beautiful by society.

The second half of this book goes a bit off the rails, but I was more than happy to hang on tight and enjoy the wild ride.

batsy Yes! Thought it was strange and memorable! 5mo

This was a shocking story that blended themes of coming of age, mystery, and horror. There were quite a few underlying messages in this book about being driven to perfection and the tool it take on us as young women. It looks at the beauty industry from an interesting perspective. It was fun but not my favorite. Horror rarely is my chosen genre, but nevertheless, I enjoyed it and was also shocked by a lot of the narrative. ⭐⭐⭐

I read five books in September and enjoyed them all!
