What exactly is this meeting that is, from the look of it, the great grand mother of all meetings, about? Thinking What kind of gathering is it that takes place at such a time of witches and strange monsters? Thinking. Have my feet accidentally brought me in the middle of something here? Thinking, Why is it just dogs at this meeting, as if they're the only animals in the Seat?

#Booker22 #Longlist
This was such a compelling read for me.

Set in the late 1970s, an English artist moves to an isolated Irish island to paint for the summer: but it's not quite as isolated as he hoped. The Island is not cut off from the news of death after death as the Troubles roll on.

BarbaraBB My favorite so far! 2y
Ruthiella I think this one is the most popular among Littens so far from the longlist! I put it on hold at the library, but the wait time is months, not weeks! 2y

Cinfhen Great review and gorgeous photo - I think this is my favorite too!! @BarbaraBB @Ruthiella 2y
charl08 @BarbaraBB @Ruthiella @Cinfhen I think for me it's a really tough call - I'd be pleased if this won, it's a wonderful book - but I'm leaning towards Keegan's book as my "most favourite". (But I might still change my mind!) 2y
Cinfhen I enjoyed that one too but it was a bit too slim. Although I wouldn‘t be disappointed if it took the prize. It‘s an exciting longlist 2y
squirrelbrain This is in my top 3, and could be my favourite but I just can‘t decide between the 3…. (This one, The Trees and Maps) 2y
JamieArc @charl08 While I loved this one, I adored Small Things Like These and think that tops my list so far too. 2y
jlhammar Keegan, Everett and this one are my top 3 so far. Really hoping they all make the shortlist! 2y
charl08 @Cinfhen so exciting! And I still have plenty to read. 2y
charl08 @squirrelbrain ooh interesting. I still have the Trees to read. 2y
charl08 @JamieArc I have my fingers crossed for it to do well. 2y
charl08 @jlhammar I'm going into The Trees with high expectations. 2y

On the face of it, this is the diary of a mostly unpleasant young woman going to see a therapist after her sister kills herself. This is interspersed with an account by "the author" of the controversial life of the therapist, supposedly a 60s counterculture rebel.

I'm not a fan of McRae Burnet: I didn't enjoy his last (also award nominated) or feel that I "got" this one either. ?‍♀️?‍♀️

jlhammar The diary of a most unpleasant young woman indeed 😂 I‘m finding her kind of amusing though. She clearly has issues. I‘m around the halfway mark. Eager to see where it‘s all headed. 2y
squirrelbrain I liked it, but have no idea why it made the long list it just didn‘t seem special enough or different enough…. Or enough of anything! 2y

Ruthiella I didn‘t love his last book which was shortlisted either 2y
AnneCecilie I wasn‘t a huge fan of his latest either, and take it from your review that I don‘t need to rush to this one either. 2y
BarbaraBB I love your photo but I am not so much looking forward to the book after your review. I did like His Bloody Project though. (edited) 2y
charl08 @jlhammar I never felt I understood where it went! 2y
charl08 @squirrelbrain I read a review which talked about multiple selves and identity: but I didn't feel the book made me think about that in new ways. I'm probably missing something. 2y
charl08 @ruthiella or me. I think I'll leave him for others to enjoy in future. 2y
charl08 @AnneCecilie I wouldn't have picked it up if not for the longlist, so... 2y
charl08 @BarbaraBB if you liked his last perhaps this will work too? Photo is from visit to RHS Bridgewater: gorgeous garden. 2y

It's perfect weather (for me) to hide in the shade and read. That'll have to wait until tomorrow though!

For a first book, this is well done. At times the story seemed to have random elements, but the overall plot line is compelling and the characters are well developed. Everything is stacked against Kiara who never is given the chance to be a child. She has to not only be responsible for herself, but takes on others when the adults in her life let her down. She quickly gets in over her head while simply trying to survive.

charl08 Looking forward to reading this #Booker22 2y

More mixed feelings about my latest #Booker22 longlist read. I think what Fowler has to say about the experience of being family to an extremist is fascinating. Lots of theatrical history, early US history, urban 19c detail.

I'm just not sure it needed 400+ pages.

Ruthiella I‘m thinking the length isn‘t gonna bother me much because I like detail in historical fiction… 2y
charl08 @Ruthiella yeah, I think this is a "it's not you, it's me" book break up. 2y
Cinfhen I liked this one but agree, it was a bit too long. If I‘m making predictions I don‘t think it‘ll make the shortlist. 2y

Cinfhen I think you‘re gonna like it @Ruthiella it‘s richly detailed!!! 2y
BarbaraBB Hmmm I am not sure I‘ll like this either. 2y
squirrelbrain Great review - I‘m still plodding along but nothing much is happening! 2y
jlhammar I‘m hoping to make some progress on this over the weekend. Thanks for the thoughtful review! 2y
charl08 @Cinfhen I thought the same. 2y
charl08 @BarbaraBB it may just be me! 2y
charl08 @squirrelbrain it does feel like a lot of book. Maybe if I read it on holiday I'd have felt more positive about it? 2y
charl08 @jlhammar I'm really enjoying seeing how everyone is responding to the longlist. Look forward to your comments. 2y

THERE ARE REASONS, just now, why romance is unlikely. John's precipitous return is connected to rumors that, back in Philadelphia, he's left a girl pregnant. He himself thinks he's probably not responsible, but a considerable sum of money was required to persuade the girl to share his doubts.

Edwin is suffering from the clap.

Of course, Asia knows none of that. She has the most wonderful brothers!

BarbaraBB I just received my copy. You‘re post and @Suet624 review make me really curious! 2y
BarbaraBB @Hazel2019 That‘s quite a recommendation! Taking note! I hope to get to it soon! 2y
Ruthiella Good to know! 2y
squirrelbrain This is in my top three, which is allreally close anyway! 2y
Cinfhen I can understand why @squirrelbrain @Hazel2019 I definitely think you‘re gonna like this one @BarbaraBB and you as well @Ruthiella 2y

Mixed feelings. Not like anything I can remember reading before, full of interesting plays with words and typographical games. I loved the teenage character, just trying to find her way at a new school.
But the cancer-as-narrator didn't quite work for me. It might for you?

Ruthiella I‘ll see if it makes the shortlist. Non-human narrators are tricky, I think. Could put me off. 🤔 2y
BarbaraBB I started this one and am about 10% in. I do love it so far but you are right it is quite experimental and it may easily go off the rails. I am eager to find out where it'll go. 2y
squirrelbrain Oh no, I‘m sorry you didn‘t love it! 2y

sarahbarnes I have this one out from the library and still need to get to it. I‘m interested in how it will go for me. 2y
Cinfhen I was able to borrow this one from #Scribd so I‘ll be starting it after I finish my current audio. I‘m not sure this is a concept I‘ll enjoy so we shall see. I generally dislike nonhuman objects as narrators🤷🏼‍♀️ I didn‘t realize there‘s a whole tag list for #Booker22 - cool 😎 thanks for including me ♥️ 2y
rmaclean4 @Cinfhen it is next up in my Scribd list also! After I finish Glory. 2y
charl08 @Ruthiella I loved Ruth Ozeki's take on it... 2y
charl08 @BarbaraBB glad to hear it's working for you. 2y
charl08 @squirrelbrain just one of those things. I don't think I'll be holding on to my copy, which is good for my space issues! 😂 2y
charl08 @sarahbarnes hope it works for you... 2y
charl08 @Cinfhen I'm really enjoying seeing what everyone else makes of the longlist. 2y
charl08 @rmaclean4 look forward to hearing what you make of it too. 2y
