Pickpick

So growing up these were my favorite books. I could and did read them over and over. Now my other nephew gets a set of his very own to wear out. I must say these copies have better covers then my old copies did. Louis Sachar will always be classic to me. #ClassicThanksgiving.

8little_paws I have read these many times. I just loved them. 7y
jmtrivera I still love those. I read them to my students when I taught elementary too. I love sharing beloved books with kids. 7y

@LibrarianRyan put up a #classicthanksgiving challenge so I found a few really old paperbacks and took some shots. I loved this book many years ago. I should reread it as an adult.

Moray_Reads Clever picture 👌👏 7y
Kirstin @Moray_Reads Thanks! 😊 7y
tricours I recently bought this oneat the yearly library book sale in the town I now live in. People seem to either love it or hate it? 7y
Kirstin @tricours I would recommend it. I think a lot of the hate stems from it being a book people are forced to read in high school. The language is old fashioned too. 7y

Maybe it's because I'm doing all the cooking, but this seemed appropriate for a #ClassicThanksgiving today. Wishing you and yours well and warm.

This post may be long so I will continue it in the comments. #ClassicThanksgiving

I had a teenager in one day looking for Pride and Prejudice. The entire class was given the assignment to read a classic and give an report on what makes it a classic. Over 200 students had this assignment so my traditional classics were all out. She wanted something no one else was going to do, so I convinced her Traditional classics were not going to cut it.

LibrarianRyan Upon seeing the brand new black and white covers, I knew just want to give her: Casino Royale by Ian Fleming. But that‘s not a classic, she says. It‘s the 60th anniversary edition, so yeah, it is. But like most honor students, she is worried that her teacher would not accept it. So I ask, what makes a classic. Well it has to be old. It has to have an ever lasting quality that doesn‘t get old and lives on forever. 7y
LibrarianRyan Okay… so I take you have never heard of James Bond. Yes, but does that make it a classic?First off, if a car can be a classic at 25 years old, then a 60 year old book qualifies. Name a Classic. Old Man in the Sea. Okay, are all Hemingway books classic, or just this one? All. 7y
LibrarianRyan Ever heard of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang? Thats a movie. But it was a book first. Is it a classic? Well if the movie is a classic, then the book would also be a classic. Okay. Ian Fleming wrote Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. He also wrote James Bond. So by the precedent set with Hemingway, James Bond is a classic. 7y

LibrarianRyan Off she goes, carrying my brand new copy of Casino Royale. A few weeks later I was standing at the desk and one of the local teachers was in. My staff member Stacy is helping her out, but before she leaves, she calls to me and said something like “ So James Bond is a classic”. 7y
LibrarianRyan You Bet it is. If a car is a classic at 25 years old, then James Bond is beyond classic. 7y
LibrarianRyan Yeah, I know, my student quoted you, and sourced it. She got an A by the way. Only the students who didn‘t pull their books from a google list of classics, got A‘s. Then she walked out. Made my day. So much so I still remember it. 7y
LibrarianRyan A lot of people will disagree with me about this title. However, James Bond as a character has stood the test of time. He may come from a more pulp or popular fiction background but he is a character that people love. They want to see what crazy thing he is going to do next, and which femme fatale will be in his bed. 7y
BillBlume I haven't read Casino Royale, but I'd never argue with it being a classic. It's been called the definitive spy novel, after all. Love that you suggested it to a student! 7y
Alfoster @LibrarianRyan Rock on!😀😀👏👏👏👍 7y
KarenUK Bond is definitely classic.... totally agree 👍💕 7y
SusanInTiburon James Bond is a modern archetype, and Casino Royale is his perfect setting -- yes, total classic. 👍🏽 7y
josie281 I love this so much ❤️ I had my sophomore English teacher who encouraged me more than I ever had been. 7y
JackieSmith Love this. As an English teacher, I don't like the false categorization of books, especially to say that some are "classics" (or, for AP teachers, "works of literary merit ") & some aren't. 7y
Godmotherx5 Great story. 7y
Lidia Of course James Bond is a classic by any standards. I agree with you 7y
TheLudicReader A classic is a book that never stops having something to say, so most books, except for, say, Twilight because although it probably *thinks* it has something to say, no one actually wants to hear it. (Sorry Twilight fans.) 7y
LibrarianRyan @TheLudicReader I like the way you put that. 7y

Yesterday everyone's posts of spy novels got me thinking of Classics. (You will see why in my next post). Thanksgiving is such a classic American Holiday I thought I would do a holiday photo challenge. No prizes, just fun and only one topic Classics. Post yours, post one, post 10. I love to see the variety of everyone's picks. I'll be posting all weekend about some of my faves. #ClassicThanksgiving. (wed-Sunday).
