I wish I hadn't waited so long to read this. What a delightful, old-fashioned country Christmas read. The author describes a Christmas from her childhood and all the exciting preparations involved, with all the magic and innocence that only a child at Christmas can bring. 🎄 ❄️

It‘s doesn‘t seem like Litsy have the entire title: “Missing Persons. Or: My grandmother‘s secrets”. It‘s also interesting that the Norwegian title has switched the sentences.

So what is this about?
In her 20s Wills is told about a cousin she never knew about. Apparently her uncle Jack fathered a child in the 50s. Since he and the mother didn‘t want to get married, the mother was sent off to a home to give birth.

How could her family accept

AnneCecilie this? And the woman‘s family? And what does it say about the 50s society? Wills looks at the social changes from the Great Famine and how that changed the society. Poor people dying or living for America, increasing the church power. She also looks at all the bureaucracy that was involved. This was an eyeopener. And in the process, Wills also discover that her grandma had some secrets 2w

I have had this copy for decades after my mom read this one not long after it was published. I have finally read it! The first quarter or so is a rough go, as there‘s a lot of info dumping. After that, I become so wholly absorbed that when the final page came (815), I wanted to know what happens next! Excellent read on the events leading up to Irish independence.

BarbaraBB I remember this one. I used to love Leon Uris‘s books. 1mo

Suet624 @Cuilin Now I have to go look at Paul Henry‘s work 2mo
Cuilin @Suet624 he painted many scenes of the west coast of Ireland, early 1900‘s. 2mo
Suet624 @Cuilin oh my gosh. I just watched a beautiful video about his work. Thank you for telling me about him. 2mo
Cuilin @Suet624 you‘re welcome, I spent so much time in Achill growing up it that when it came time to pick an artist to study for my leaving, I chose Paul Henry. 2mo

We read The Spinning Heart years ago for Bookclub, and we are going to see Donal Ryan speak about this tagged new book of his on Wednesday next. I was afraid I wouldn‘t remember The Spinning H, as this is a companion, follow up book ( that can be read as a stand-alone too) But the characters came back to me ( mostly). This is a brilliant book. Great characters again. Love his writing.

Balibee146 I read The Queen of Dirt Island recently and it was very good 2mo

Set in Ireland in 1994, The Coast Road follows two women coping with their unhappy marriages at a time when divorce is still illegal. Collette left her husband, but returned, and now her husband won‘t allow her access to her children and she lives in poverty. Izzy is frustrated and miserable, struggling to find autonomy within the confines of a marriage she cannot escape. Both are considering the high cost of personal freedom. An excellent debut.
