Troubles in Paradise | Elin Hilderbrand

My library hold took a long time to come in so I was sitting with the cliffhanger from Book 2 for a while. I thought this one was paced better than the others but it felt predictable. Baker was so annoying to me in the first book but now is my fav character. I would have liked a little more on the Russ storyline, it felt a bit too wrapped up but also somehow not wrapped up at all?

This was a re-read for me. It was fun to dip into historical fiction but still keep secrets & gossip that I'm coming to love from Elin. For the most part, I really loved the characters but there was something about Kate that bothered me that I still can't put my finger on. I'd love to go even further back in history and get Exalta's story - there's gotta be something that made her the way she was, right?!

I was fine with Fray & Leland getting back together, I liked Linc & Bess getting together, I laughed at Coop and the chaos that is his love life but I was MAD about Ursula & Jake. That last little bit ruined this whole update for me.

The little Greek chorus at the beginning of each chapter helped to keep me in time. And I liked that there wasn't a spotlight on every weekend. I enjoyed getting little vignettes from the various characters, dipping in & out of their lives and seeing how they had grown & changed (particularly Ursula & Leland!) But I hate this was framed around an affair and I hate Jake for carrying on an affair for YEARS, even before he was married.

Better than the first in the series and I really loved the cliffhanger ending. I still struggled with the balance between what happened to Russ and everyone‘s love lives. And I had a really hard time with Rosie‘s diaries - she knew Russ was married and I‘m finding it hard to find sympathy for her. The list for book 3 is super long at my library, I hope it moves quickly!

The pacing felt totally off to me. There was such focus on what happened to Russ and then it just disappeared before rearing its head again. The characters were the most enjoyable part of the book for me, I particularly liked Irene and Huck - I hope we see more of them together in the rest of the series. I just hope that the next book integrates the "mystery" with the relationship side of the story better.

A really nice end to the series. I‘ll miss these characters, especially Ava and Jennifer.

While I did think the pacing in this one was off, I think it might be my favourite of the series so far. The last 1/3 or so felt rushed - and I would have like a little more time with Bart's return, Kelley's crisis, and the wedding. I really liked Margaret in this installment and the growth that Jennifer, Ava, and Kevin showed was really lovely to read. I don't think we've seen the end of Jennifer's problems, though.

I didn't like this one quite as much as I liked Winter Street. Mitzi really got on my nerves and Ava's love triangle felt too similar to last year's story but with the gentlemen swapped. But I did really enjoy Margaret & Drake's romance and while I wouldn't say I enjoyed Jennifer's storyline, it was one of the more compelling arcs. I am eager to pick up the next one so that I can see what happens there and what happens with Bart.

marleed For all Elon‘s Nantucket beach reads, it the Winter Street series I like best. 8mo
janeycanuck @marleed I‘ve been really enjoying it! I wish they were a bit longer, they can feel rushed with so many characters to follow. I‘m hoping the last book is as satisfying as the first 3. 8mo

I wanted more. I know we're getting more soon but the next instalment picks up a year later! There was a lot of time spent setting the scene, which was great but it felt like that came at the expense of giving us more of the plot. I loved Kevin & Isabelle's story, I cheered when Ava dropped Nathaniel, I wanted to punch Patrick in the face, and Mitzi was the least likeable character I've seen from Elin H. so far.
