We had time to kill between church and a graduation party, so of course we went to a bookstore. @Graywacke I blame you for the tagged book. 😀

Leftcoastzen Nice haul! 6mo
Graywacke Oh, blame so accepted. Yay. Enjoy. But maybe read Flannery O,Connor 1st? I mean, she‘s irresistible. I‘m curious about the Seinfeld. I want to watch those shows again. 6mo
Lcsmcat @Graywacke It‘s going to be hard to decide what to read first, once I finish my current Lahiri. 6mo

I was a little worried about listening a bunch of essays I might not be interested in, but this turns out to be good stuff. There are simply some lightning essays in here. Many are about the Tudors and the Wolf Hall trilogy. Some are on overlooked women authors, really great stuff. She was an excellent writer, able to make her essays playful in a writerly way. She loved her sentences. Overall, I loved the collection and its richness.

BarbaraBB Wonderful review 🤍 7mo
Graywacke @BarbaraBB ☺️ Thanks. I want to read A Place of Greater Safety now. But… I might need a French Revolution prep course first! 7mo

This is the memoir Mantel wrote back in 2003. This focuses mainly on her childhood and I loved those parts, learning more about her childhood and family situation. There‘s also some parts about her growing up and her 20s, all her experiences with pain due to endometriosis.

This was a buddy read with @Reviewsbylola , and the conversation was just as enjoyable as the book! Mantel‘s memoir covers her childhood, her chronic illness, and early marriage. Both of us enjoyed how much she played with language in her childhood chapters. (Plus she used one of my favorite #weirdwords horripilation = goosebumps!) It‘s always interesting to read other women‘s illness journeys and how frustrating misdiagnosis can be!

I have to say I'm truly spoiled on my birthdays. This year was no exception. My #litsypenpal is the best! Simon thought so too so he decided to model all the goodies. Shortbread, yummy Mickey Mouse tea, honey spoons, jelly beans, face masks, and four books I'm very excited to read. Ohh I can't forget that dog cloth bag because it‘s now my favorite thing. It's got so many pockets! @Litlady you are amazing! Thank you from the bottom of my heart! ❤️

Litlady Hurray for birthdays! Simon is doing an excellent job, I must say .. Lol! 📚🥳🎉 Happy, happy birthday, dear friend! 🥳🍰📚🎈😘📚 2y
AmyG How lovely! Happy Birthday!!!! Remarkably Bright Creatures is so wonderful. 2y

Final bk of 2021 is for 1st rdg grp of 2022 + was a really good read. Told with Hilary Mantel's cutting wit + brilliant prose this is a story of 2 girls who form an unlikely relationship in childhood +into Catholic grammar school where their background is at odds with more affluent pupils. Skip to their going to London uni in 1970 where they drift+deal with sex,new friends, religion, rivalry, food issues,+more. A great story by a wonderful writer.

Ruthiella I love Mantel. Not read this one yet, but I hope to become a completist of her work someday! 3y
andrew61 @Ruthiella I think you will enjoy it, hope to see your review at some point. 3y
CarolynM I've had a copy of this on my shelf for years but never got around to it. You've encouraged me to put it on my list this year🙂 3y
