This book came in last week, but it was still in a box until I asked about it. I'm glad I asked though because this book was fantastic. We first hear Robin's perspective then learn more about why her (single!) mom uprooted her daughter from Korea to ALABAMA. Meaty memoir, even though it's YA.

When Jude‘s home in Syria becomes too violent she and her mother flee to the U.S. where her uncle and his family live. As Jude navigates school in a language she is learning, she also finds excitement in trying out for the school play, even as she worries about her father and brother left behind in Syria.

This beautifully told novel in verse is a great read for upper elementary and early middle.

What We Owe | Golnaz Hashemzadeh Bonde

I couldn‘t put this slim novel down. Nahid is a woman in her 50‘s, living in Sweden after immigrating from Iran in the 1980‘s. Now facing death, she reflects on her life, relationships, and motherhood without sentimentality. What do we owe those who come before us, and those we leave behind?

It packs a punch, but it‘s not without hope.

This is one of those times where the cover of the book and the tone of the book are way off.

This is a complicated story of fifth grader Mia, a Chinese immigrant, and her parents. This is a fantastic middle-grade read about immigration, poverty, racism, friendship, community and so much more.

I absolutely loved this story!

Peddler410 I absolutely loved this story as well. I read it aloud to my 4th grader who is in a Chinese Immersion program at her school. It opened up so many great conversations! 6y
BookInMyHands @Peddler410 Wow, what a great opportunity for your kiddo, and I love that this story led to more conversations. This might be my favorite middle-grade read for this year. 6y

Alfredo Alva was a child when work in the family‘s village of La Ceja, Guanajuato could no longer sustain his family. Alfredo and his papa journey through the Rio Grande and Texas to find a new home where they can earn enough money to support their family.

After 4 years Alfredo‘s father is able to bring the family to live together in Texas again. This lovely tale is one family‘s immigration story.

Thi Bui tells the complicated story of her childhood, her family‘s immigration from Vietnam, and in a quest to understand her parents and her own life as a mother, she draws out of her parents the story of their childhoods too.

I loved this beautifully told and deeply personal story.

My #TBR pile is more like a "maybe" pile.
I'm working on reading immigration stories, but I think next I need an escapist read instead. I'm reading 6 books right now and can't focus on any of them!

#FeistyFeb

Bkwurm Love the pile and the basket! If you decide on the immigration stories please share your favorites. I lean toward those and am always looking for new rec's. 🤓 8y
DebinHawaii I like the 'maybe pile' idea! 🤔📚👍😆 8y

BookInMyHands @DivineDiana I saw that and added it to my list yesterday, thanks! 8y
BookInMyHands @Bkwurm I've read a few good ones so far and I'm using #immigrationstories if you want to find them. 8y
BookInMyHands @DebinHawaii Thanks! I'm a really moody reader. 8y
DivineDiana Oh, great! The beginning covers lots of history and it can get a bit overwhelming with all the foreign names, but stick with it, and it will steal your heart. 📚❤️️ 8y

Azzi knows the war is all around her, yet life has found a new normal. But when her father receives a call, the family must leave without their belongings and flee the country.

Azzi must now adjust to a new country, language and school, and all without her grandmother.

This graphic novel published by Amnesty International was a great story for grade schoolers about the immigration experience.

I absolutely loved this story.

Following a group of young Japanese women brought to San Francisco as picture brides, the narrative continues through life's milestones up to their internment during WWII.

Using first person plural, the narrative spans the lives of many women, a fascinating way to experience a breadth of experiences.

We Came to America | Faith Ringgold

We sure did. Every one of us.

I love how this book begins with an acknowledgement that some of us where here before the others, and then continues talking about America in our immigrant diversity of "color, race, and religion."

With a simple story and refrain this would be a good fit for storytime. The White House could REALLY use a good storytime right now.
