Received this as an Early Reviewers book on LT. I feel somewhat illiterate where poetry is concerned, and want to appreciate it more. So far I‘ve enjoyed#BillyCollins. He‘s very accessible. Any recommendations for a poetry novice?

Liz_M I recommend the tagged book. She presents a well-known poem and follows it with a short essay detailing a close reading of the poem.

In a Lonely Place | Dorothy B. Hughes

pick

Hughes has been compared to Raymond Chandler, James Cain, and Jim Thompson. In this book, her POV character, Dix Steele, a serial killer, is worthy predecessor to Patricia Highsmith‘s Tom Ridley, although not quite so personable. Despite its gruesome subject, most of the violence takes place on between the chapters and left to the imagination. Highly Recommended. I also recommend another book by her, The Expendable Man.
