This is an old obscure book left on my mother‘s shelves. I think it‘s actually a 1963 printing. Anyway, I‘ve started. The author grew up in Hawaii. Molokai was the leprosy quarantine island in the 19th century.

pickWell-written book and an important story to tell about Hawaiians with leprosy forced to live away from everyone. Just hard to read about death after death after death of people important to Rachel. I‘m glad she was able to meet her daughter and have 20 years to build that relationship with her and her grandchildren and to reconnect with her sister. Just really sad about the things she had to endure before that.
so-soI found some parts more interesting than others. Some of the biographical info on some of the people who ran the place was not nearly as interesting, I thought, as the patients who were there and the details about their lives (before and) there. The book was quite detailed, and I sometimes did find it plodding. The font was small and it did take a long time to read. Overall, though, I am rating it “good”.
pickI‘ve had this on my shelf for a long time and just finally now getting around to it. I won‘t say I was disappointed, but I think I was expecting a 5-star read, and it wasn‘t quite that high for me. But still really good, and a well-written novel of historical fiction about the leprosy colony of Kalaupapa.
On the fifth day of Christmas my true love (the library) brought me this powerful book about leper colonies in Hawaii. So good. One of my favorites this year. #12booksofChristmas

pickI don‘t even know what to say about this book I loved it so much. Who knew a book about a leper colony could make my heart sing like this. This is a must read for historical fiction readers.
