Another one I watched earlier this week, again not up for best picture, but for best actress. Melissa McCarthy definitely played a great part and against her normal type. I was sucked into this story and found myself rooting for the criminals, even though I knew it couldn‘t end well. Another interesting film, based on a nonfiction book (that I really should read) and about writing and a woman writer this year.

readordierachel I really liked this movie. Such a wild story! And she and Richard E. Grant both give excellent performances. 6y
Redwritinghood I have this on hold at the library, but the line is really long for this one. May have to buy a copy. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @readordierachel Yes, for two characters that should have been and in many ways were unlikable characters, I found the story so interesting. And yes, they both played such great characters!! 6y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @readordierachel Did you watch The Wife yet? Out of those 2 ladies, that is going to be the toughest category for me, they both gave stellar performances! They both should get Oscars! 6y
readordierachel I haven't seen it yet, but I'm looking forward to it! Glenn Close always delivers. It would be cool if there was a tie! Although I'd like it to be a 3-way tie with Olivia Coleman. I know The Favourite isn't for everyone, but I thought she was so compelling in it. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @readordierachel I‘ll agree there, I didn‘t like the movie The Favorite, but I completely agree, she gave a great performance in it! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Redwritinghood Sadly, I bet if you wait...the line will suddenly get shorter right after the Oscars. 6y
Redwritinghood @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Good point. Still waiting for now. 6y

I watched this one earlier this week and I have to say I wasn‘t expecting much from this one, it isn‘t up for best picture, but it is for Best Actress. Such a twisty and timely moment for this movie as Women‘s Marches and #MeToo are currently news . Definitely a good one about writers and writing as well, and one whose book it‘s based on I will be adding to my TBR list.

BooksForEmpathy I loved this movie!! And book! 6y
Cathythoughts I hope it comes to our cinemas soon. Sounds really good & there hasn‘t been a decent movie on anywhere in ages 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Cathythoughts It‘s out to rent or buy already, that‘s how I saw it. At home through Vudu, sadly if it was ever in my theater it wasn‘t there long and I missed it. 6y
Macnjen Glenn Close did a fantastic job in this movie. I‘d like to read the book now. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Macnjen I thought the same after I saw it! 6y

Still working my way through the nominees this week, and I have to say I was disappointed in The Favorite. For another one based in history, and the only one that might have based a Bechdel test, I think they over played the sensational parts (that may or may not even be historically correct) and embellished where the story, for me at least, would have been more compelling played straight like a great Masterpiece Theater timepiece.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Which if history is any indicator, means this one will win big tomorrow night. 🤷‍♀️ 6y
DivineDiana I totally agree with you. Disappointed. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @DivineDiana From the previews at theaters, I was expecting it to be funny, but no. I found it more sad and over the top than humorous. 6y

JacqMac That‘s disappointing to hear. I was looking forward to seeing this one. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JacqMac I‘m sorry. And you should still see it, honestly it‘s up for a bunch of Oscars, so my opinion is definitely not in the majority. 6y
Weaponxgirl I found the first half hilarious and then I got bored towards the end. 6y
TheBookDream @Weaponxgirl I think that‘s a theme with that director. The Lobster was hilarious at the front boring and extremely distressing towards the end. I also felt that way about The Favourite 6y
enidkeaner Wow! I actually loved this movie! I pretty much love everything this director‘s done - I think his works are meant to be a bit odd and off putting and this is absolutely the most commercial thing he‘s done. I think most of the people in the theater with me hated it though. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @enidkeaner I‘m glad you loved it! Hopefully @JacqMac will too since she was looking forward to it. 6y
JacqMac I‘m still going to watch it. We shall see. Lol 6y
enidkeaner @JacqMac I would say - just do not go into this expecting it to be really traditionally funny. I thought it was mostly hilarious but it is really odd and off putting but for me, it‘s odd and off putting in a really good way. I tend to watch movies for their directors more than for any other reason, so I got pretty much exactly what I expected 6y
JacqMac @enidkeaner Will do! Thanks for the input. 6y

I‘m still working my way through the Oscar nominees (at least the ones out for steaming on various services) and this one is excellent too....another great true story that is very important and needs to be told and seen.

Oh my, I watched this movie today and it meshed so well with my current read The Color of Law, I‘d definitely recommend it, and I‘ll have to get this book and read it now too!

Have you seen this movie @BarbaraTheBibliophage ?

#Oscars2019

BarbaraTheBibliophage No, I haven‘t seen it. I‘ll get it once I‘ve started the next book! Thanks for the heads up. 6y
BkClubCare Watched the movie last week! It‘s good 6y

JHSiess Watched it last night. Really funny in places. But disturbing & a great hx lesson. The closing images prove we haven't come very far 6y
JSW So good! The book is a worthy read as well. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JHSiess Yes, Exactly! He did such a great job with that...you watch most of it thinking how backward we were, remembering in the back of your mind, no not really that long ago, and no not really that far given current events... then at the end he hits you with all the current we haven‘t come far,not at all 😞 6y
