so-so

Meh. One of my least favorite of Christie‘s works so far.
Hastings was especially annoying in these stories.
I mostly listened to the audio while knitting Estella, my emotional support chicken, seen here with the paperback, so it was worth it.
I got laid off last month & am having a hard time finding a new job. Thankfully I have books & hobbies to keep me from falling too far into depression. #christiescapers #agathachristieclubr3 #audioknitting

MaleficentBookDragon @Yuki_Onna they were trending in the knitting and crochet communities awhile back. It looked too difficult to do to me so I let my kit just sit for almost 2 years. It really wasn‘t as hard as I expected. Mistakes WERE made, but that just adds to her charm. 4d

I would not recommend this book as a first one to read of Christie's; it is clearly not her best. The novel's origin as a short story collection is glaringly obvious. The narrative feels fragmented, jumping from one escapade to the next without the seamless plot construction Christie is renowned for. Also, there is no central puzzle for the reader to solve. The clues are not laid out for the armchair detective; ⬇️

dabbe ... instead, the reveals rely on information Poirot uncovers off-page or through his “little grey cells“ in ways the reader cannot follow. This can be deeply unsatisfying for those seeking a traditional mystery. However, judged on its own terms as a pulp adventure thriller, it is a fast-paced and lightly enjoyable romp and might appel to readers who enjoy vintage adventure serials. 1w

DGRachel I listened to this on audio 7 years ago and found Poirot unbearable, but I did have a suggestion on how to improve the reading experience. 🤣🤣 1w

DGRachel Every time Poirot says “The Big Four” someone should say “dunh dunh dunh”. Someone else suggested turning that into a drinking game, but I think you‘d die of alcohol poisoning before you got halfway through. 🤣🤣🤣 (edited) 1w

dabbe @DGRachel As I just spit out my wine reading this! 😂🤩😂 And the villains! I always saw them in my head, twirling that dastardly mustaches--even the crazy woman scientist! 1w

dabbe @rwmg I like my villain to be on level with my detective/hero. I simply cannot tolerate an unintelligent villain. But mastermind? I agree; it's a big overstretch. Unless it's SH, of course--who would make the best criminal mastermind. 🖤 1w

Keeping up with the further reading - I am behind anyway 🙈🙈🙈 - before starting the next Poirot in line. Both books narrate Poirot‘s life as displayed throught the different novels and give background infos on how the novels were written and published.
