All 9 of these stories were sweet and lighthearted. I enjoyed reading them. I rated this book a 3 out of 5 stats.

This is a pretty slow story. Overall, I‘m rating it ok, though. I‘m not thrilled about rats being poisoned at the border. None of the 4 were terribly likable or interesting. I was a child in 1979, so some of the 70s references (tv, music, etc) were kind of fun. Also, my grandparents, then parents sold farm equipment, so it was interesting for me to read about the different farm equipment, though this is unlikely to be of interest to many.

#readingtheamericas2023 #canada Wonderful character study of a young orphan who struggles to build a life for herself of her own design. The main character becomes a mother and a writer and the nature of storytelling in both these roles provides rich layers on top of her simple outer life, her deep inner life and her complicated loves. Plus she lives by a river that flows in two directions.
A shocking, devastating work of history. Author James Daschuk began with the question: why is the health of Indigenous Canadians so much worse than that of other Canadians? The answers go all the way back to first contact between Europeans and the peoples of North America, and then later on, with the collapse of the bison population, the deliberate use of starvation as a political tool. I listened to a new audiobook edition published in 2022.

If you are a LIW fan, this will be enjoyable! I learned so much about the places the Ingalls and Wilders lived, and how/why they stopped at those particular spots.
