Food and Literature | Gitanjali G. Shahani
101 posts | 3 to read
This volume examines food as subject, form, landscape, polemic, and aesthetic statement in literature. With essays analyzing food and race, queer food, intoxicated poets, avant-garde food writing, vegetarianism, the recipe, the supermarket, food comics, and vampiric eating, this collection brings together fascinating work from leading scholars in the field. It is the first volume to offer an overview of literary food studies and reflect on its origins, developments, and applications. Taking up maxims such as 'we are what we eat', it traces the origins of literary food studies and examines key questions in cultural texts from different global literary traditions. It charts the trajectories of the field in relation to work in critical race studies, postcolonial studies, and children's literature, positing an omnivorous method for the field at large.

Hey Littens,

It's the final weekend to submit your nominations for countries to explore in 2026 for the #foodandlit challenge! What a great excuse to avoid your family for a while, and if you ask me, looking at a map makes it look like important work.

We hope to include countries from these 12 regions. Regions are loose, so use your judgment on where to place a country. Feel free to nominate by commenting on this post. ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Preference will be given to countries not previously selected, but if there is demand, we may revisit a country. Selections will be vetted for availability of a range of books, food, & ingredients. If you share your nominations in your own separate post, please tag @Texreader
My next post will list the countries previously visited. #foodandlit @Butterfinger

I'm thrilled to be back with @texreader and hate that @Catsandbooks is leaving. I am also frightened. To be fully transparent, I abandoned these ladies when I fell into a huge depression that took me years to recover. Basically, I couldn't read. My mind just couldn't do it, and I left Litsy. No books, why Litsy? Again, I was not myself. I'm in a good place, my children are not being threatened, and I am enjoying lit again. Here's to rdg and eating

Texreader ♥️♥️♥️ A happy day for me when you came back to Litsy!! ♥️♥️♥️ 2w

SamAnne Welcome back to reading!!! I went through my own depression that really debilitated me. Off an on a few years. It was scary not to be able to finish a book. Reading has always inspired and comforted. 2w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'm so glad you're back and in a good place. I told Karen that I can help with graphics or something if needed. I know that's what Leila was doing. Absolutely no hard feelings if you enjoy making them and want to do so. (This one is fantastic!) 2w
Butterfinger @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I love that you are doing it, too. I think you were the one who introduced us to the radiostation app. Karen did the app. I like researching for books to represent different communities. 2w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Wonderful! I'm pretty sure I told folks about the music app so that likely was my influence. Just let me know what I can do to help. If you want to email me it's KellySchnorrbusch at gmail.com 2w
Butterfinger @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I realized my mistake. @texreader did the graphic. I loved doing the different radio stations. I just forgot how to do it, but it was so fun. A real immersive experience. 🥰 2w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I have found two sites with radio channels and forget which one I've mentioned already. Radiooooo.com and radio.garden The latter is more of a what's on air now site worth lots of options for many places but I sometimes realize how much of our music goes international. Like, what do you mean they're listening to Taylor Swift in Algeria? 2w

Texreader Regions are fluid. There‘s no hard and fast rule about where a country belongs. If you think it belongs in a particular region and a look at the map can justify it, then that works! @Butterfinger @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @LitsyEvents (edited) 2w
TheBookHippie So exciting!! 2w
Dilara Do you have a list of all the countries previously chosen? (Actually, I have a list of all from 2022 to 2025 because I participated, but I am missing all the countries explored before that 😊)

Probably a tad over ambitious but needless to say I will be happy with anything you pick. I have a few repeats and maybe some new ones? (edited) 2w

I am not a people person, so I didn't visit an Irish pub on St. Patrick's Day. I got chicken pot pie from Claddaugh's Restaurant in Asheville. We're going to try boxty tomorrow. My mother used to fry potato cakes when we were running out of food before payday. With a big mess of beans. The memories that food evokes. I wonder if it came down from Irish ancestors.

I had planned to try to read & cook more for #FoodAndLit this year than last year, but I‘m struggling to find books or recipes that fit my mood this month. Then I saw a recipe posted by @Texreader along with her adaptation and decided to give it a try myself. I had some smoked sausage & sauerkraut made by my family that I used to make a slightly modified version of this broodje rookworst on toasted bread.

#Netherlands

Lesliereadsalot Wow! This looks amazing! 10mo
Jess861 oh yummmm...that looks soooo good! How did it taste? 10mo
See All 13 Comments
Daisey @Lesliereadsalot Thanks! It was a little different but really good. 10mo
Daisey @Jess861 I tend to prefer horseradish with my smoked sausage, but the mustard was good on a sandwich. 10mo
Texreader @Daisey I thought the exact same thing!! Glad it worked for you. 10mo
BarbaraBB This is real Dutch indeed! 10mo
Daisey @BarbaraBB Good to hear! It‘s definitely a sandwich I‘ll make again. Now, I may have to try something else this weekend. 10mo
BarbaraBB Other than that we don‘t have much real Dutch food. We have so many influences from all over the world (European and former colonies) that many of us don‘t eat the rather not very interesting Dutch meals 10mo
Daisey @BarbaraBB The variety of influence makes sense. The sausage sandwich was easy for me because of its similarity to the food common in my family due to German heritage. For the same reason I‘ll not be trying the split pea soup. That was one of my most dreaded meals as a child, and the only difference seems to be we used home cured ham in place of sausage. 10mo
Daisey Something more sweet like this is a possibility. https://www.blendwithspices.com/hopjesvla-dutch-coffee-custard/ 10mo
BarbaraBB Vla! Someone else on Litsy has been eating that too. It‘s so old fashioned but I used to love it as a kid. Good idee to try it! 10mo

yourfavouritemixtape I‘m not sure I will manage yet another reading challenge, but this sounds so fun. So yes please, I‘d like to be on the tag list 🙂 2y
Laughterhp Hey, can you please take me off the list? I was unable to participate at all this year, so don‘t think I‘ll be able to next year either. Thanks! 2y
Catsandbooks @Laughterhp no problem! 👍🏼 2y
Captivatedbybooks How does this work? 2y
Texreader @Captivatedbybooks Read a book set in or by an author from the country during its respective month, and try to enjoy one traditional recipe/meal from that country. All completely voluntary—participate the whole year or when you can 2y
Tineke Can you add me to the tag list? Thank you! 2y
Catsandbooks @Tineke added you! 😊 2y
Tineke Thank you! I'm so looking forward to this. Is there a master list of books set in the selected countries? I have King Peggy by Peggielene Bartels and Eleanor Herman on my wishlist. And it's about a naturalized American woman who becomes the king of a village in Ghana. It's non fiction. This story has interested me for years, so high time to acquire this. The wikipedia is interesting too and will send me down a rabbit hole I'm sure. 2y
Catsandbooks @Tineke Yes we will have a master book list where suggestions can be made! There's currently one for 2023 too! As it gets closer to the end of the year there will be more resources being posted 😉 2y
vonnie862 Ooh I would like to join! 2y
Catsandbooks @vonnie862 added you! 😊 2y

In elementary school, I had a friend whose parents were political emigres from Communist Cuba. I fondly remember the music, the stories, and the food from this special family. I never eat bananas, but I ate Ms. Rodriguez's fried plantains so that is what I fixed for #Cuba #FoodandLit @texreader @Catsandbooks

Catsandbooks Love fried plantains! 4y
aa_guer2021 My husband is Ecuadorian and some of his family members are of Cuban descent. They have fried plantains at almost every special get together and it is always such a treat! 4y
