I actually hadn‘t originally planned on reading this one for the #ReadingAroundTheWorld challenge for #Mexico, but ultimately I‘m glad I ended up reading this one. The story between this young husband and wife living on the US-Mexican border in 2005 makes for an interesting read. I think it will lead to interesting conversations amongst readers though I wish that the ending was a little less ambiguous on some of the other characters‘ fates…

Librarybelle Wonderful! And the book cover goes so well with your flowers! 2y
TorieStorieS @Librarybelle Thanks!! A happy coincidence! 😊 2y
BarbaraBB It sounds very good 2y
TorieStorieS @BarbaraBB I think it would be great for a book club to discuss! 2y

This book was for my #readingaroundtheworld challenge, for the country of #Comoros. For me this was a hard book to read, not because of the subject matter but the way it was punctuated.

The Readers' Room | Antoine Laurain

Pickpick

Another fun read from Antoine Laurain. This time, Laurain takes us inside the Paris publishing world and the lead-up to the Prix Goncourt. The “unknown” author of a runaway bestseller must be found, as a number of recent deaths/murders bear a striking resemblance to those described in the book. The ending leaves a lingering question; but overall, it is a clever, noir—and very French—fictional ride. #readingaroundtheworld #France

yourfavouritemixtape This sounds great! Adding to my TBR-pile asap! 🙂 4y
Louise @yourfavouritemixtape Enjoy it! Laurain has written several fun books. I‘ve enjoyed all the ones I‘ve read so far, but I have a special affection for (edited) 4y
yourfavouritemixtape @Louise I am intrigued! I think I‘m gonna try reading it in French! 4y

#readingaroundtheworld #Taiwan #nightmarket As a murder mystery it wasn‘t much, but as a flavor filled glimpse at the multi-layered gangster world, the different ethnic rivalries and the night markets of Taiwan it was quite enjoyable.

rockpools It sounds good! 5y

#readingaroundtheworld #Taiwan A multigenerational family epic that centers on a woman born on the night of the 228 (2/28/47) insurrection and massacre by the ruling KMT in Taiwan. The story explores compromises and betrayals that this family makes to survive the brutal regime, and the echo of those choices across generations. There are a couple of soft spots in the plot when the MC is not true to her character but overall an educational read.

rockpools Sounds really good! 5y
sprainedbrain I‘m about 20% through this book for my Taiwan choice, too! Glad you liked it. 🙌🏻 5y

#readingaroundtheworld #Togo My December Book on Togo did give me an intimate glimpse of life in a small tribal town in that African country. However, the story is largely the drama of a young girl running away from a forced polygamous marriage to an old man and from the FGM he insisted upon. Most of the book details the horrors of the US immigration detention system which treats asylum seekers like criminals and her lawyers fight to free her.

rockpools I‘m glad it was a pick! Hoping to read this in the quiet days after Christmas (cos they exist, don‘t they?!) 5y

#readingaroundtheworld #southafrica The story of the miscegenation of an Afrikaner family on the frontier of South Africa and the pull the land itself expresses across multiple generations. A wonderful ensemble of the living and the dead interact with each other and are visited by an investigating magistrate after a family tragedy. The magistrate comes to judge a family whose traditions and blood lines have kept it insular.

Days of Reading | Marcel Proust

Pickpick

“There are no days of my childhood which I lived so fully perhaps as those I thought I had left behind without living them, those I spent with a favourite book.” So begins Proust‘s beautiful essay “Days of Reading (1)”. In his distinctive, densely detailed style, Proust shares his thoughts on reading, writing, art, machinism, society, Ruskin, and more. This is a slim volume filled with gems. #France #ReadingAroundTheWorld
