An African in Greenland | Tt-Michel Kpomassie

Pickpick

As a child in #Togo, Kpoomassie found a book about Greenland and was just mesmerized. It took him years, but he got there and spent over a year traveling the country and meeting it‘s people, which he details here. He‘s a wonderful writer and I just loved this! I‘m also glad I couldn‘t smell the place because yikes! (Oh, and he‘s 5‘11”, but Greenlanders are so small, he looks like a giant.)

BarbaraBB Glad you liked it too! And yes that smell!! 😂 2y

When the author was a boy in #Togo he suddenly decides he wants to live in #Greenland and sets of to do so. This #NYRB book is about his travels getting there but mostly about living among the people of Greenland. I learned a lot about them. Family dynamics, hunting, alcohol, winter and cold. It‘s a hard life under hard circumstances but with proud people. Very interesting!

BarbaraBB @swishandflick @batsy @Librarybelle @tamra Thank you friends, I‘ve been hiking through the Netherlands with some friend this weekend and it‘s getting Winter here! 2y
Hooked_on_books Nice! I‘m just starting this one today! 2y
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books Using it for two challenges as well?! 2y
Hooked_on_books Actually, I have another book I want to read for Greenland and if I count this one, then I‘m less likely to read that one. So I‘m telling myself it can only count for one challenge to make sure I read the other book. 🤪 A bit of lunacy, I know! 2y

A short book, we are already leaving #Ghana for #Togo, #BurkinaFaso, and #Niger. #readingafrica2022 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

Disclaimer- I only read part two of this travelogue which covers Paige & Jim‘s 16 months driving through Africa! The Roger‘s with little planning but a lot of hubris and apparently endless funds decide to drive through the entire continent of Africa. I was a little amazed how these two made it out alive, as they went places they had no business being & stumbled upon some dangerous scenarios. And who knew you could drive across Africa??

Librarybelle Great summary…it does make you think that they have endless funds for this journey 2y

Still LOVING the audio and the first person narrative stories. This current story is about the PanAm Lockerbie aviation terror attack. And it‘s focusing on #Libya #ReadingAfrica22 just in case anyone needs that country 😉 This story also mentions #Togo and #Senegal

Librarybelle Thanks for posting the other countries too! 2y
Cinfhen If I‘m being honest the #Togo #Senegal connection is much more of a mention @Librarybelle but 💯 Libya works😁 2y

A musician is murdered but the police, justice system, the whole government are corrupt. Indeed, any could have committed it. How can his friends find the murderer & help another musician in trouble with the law without ending up dead? This is an extraordinarily well-crafted murder mystery set in #Togo, with a set of Jazz fans trying to solve the murder with the thinnest of leads in a vastly corrupt world. Very well done; highly recommended.

Texreader I am puzzled and saddened by the poor Litsy score for this book. I‘m glad I‘ve read it and plan to read book 2. I stayed up till 3 am to finish it something I rarely do for even the best of books. There were a few bad typos towards the end but I‘m experiencing that so much lately I‘m not dinging it for that. This is an excellent murder mystery set in #Togo. I‘m trying to understand its 0 rating on Litsy because it is extremely well-written and I‘m learning an immense amount about Togo and this part of Africa. #readingafrica2022 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

Employing my new idea to use google satellites to map where I am reading, here I am in Lomé, the capitol of #Togo. #readingafrica2022 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

Librarybelle This is great! I love this idea 3y
KristiAhlers I love this idea! I‘m super visual too so I‘ve been hauling out my dads NatGeo coffee table atlas. One thing I didn‘t mind moving into the house after we brought him to live with us last year. 3y
