August is Ghost Month in Taiwana time to commemorate the dead: burn incense, visit shrines, commemorate ancestors, and avoid unlucky situations, large purchases, and bodies of water. Jing-nan, a young man who runs a food stand in a bustling Taipei night market, doesn't consider himself superstitious, but this August is going to haunt him no matter what he does. He is shocked to the core when he learns his ex-girlfriend from high school has been murdered. She was found scantily clad and shot in the chest on the side of a highway where she was selling betel nuts to passing truck drivers. Beyond his harrowing grief for this lost love of his life, Jing-nan is also confused by the news: "betel nut beauties" are usually women in the most desperate of circumstances; the job is almost as taboo as prostitution. But Julia Huang had been the valedictorian of their high school, and the last time Jing-nan spoke to her she was enrolled in NYU's honor program, far away in New York. The facts don't add up. Julia's parents don't think so, either, and the police seem to have closed the case without asking any questions. The Huangs beg Jing-nan if he can do some investigating on his ownreconnect with old classmates, see if he can learn anything about Julia's life that she might have kept from them. Reluctantly, he agrees, for Julia's sake; but nothing can prepare him for what he learns, or how it will change his life.

This book is TEDIOUS! It claims to be about a man trying to solve the mystery of the murder of the girlfriend he hasn't seen in 6 years.* But really it's one LONG passage after another describing & dissecting Taiwan's history, religions, cultural diversity, food, politics, & architecture. At first I liked these random lectures as I don't know a whole lot about Taiwan & the background was interesting. But the little nuggets of plot between essays⬇️

bookandbedandtea ⬆️ weren't enough the carry the book. Plus every woman he encounters wants him and that gets hard to believe pretty quickly. (*Yes, why he hasn't seen the woman he loves for 6 years is explained. No, it isn't a good reason.) I thought about skipping to the end to see whodunit but the mystery was so poorly done that I didn't care. As a guide to Taiwan it wasn't bad though. 2y

An atmospheric read of the underworld crime set in Taipei #Taiwan I will definitely read more of Ed Lin. He had just the right amount of humor in his thriller. Every page was infused with food detail. #ReadingAsia2021 @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle

Librarybelle I like reading food passages in books - it‘s a great connection to the setting, I think! 3y

Wow wish I would have read @DGRachel post about Ghost Month before reading it because that review really sums up the story well! This is by far my least favorite book of the year. #ReadingAsia #Taiwan

BarbaraBB I remember @DGRachel ‘s review and am sorry you had to go through it nevertheless 😀. At least it ticked off Taiwan! 3y
mhillis @DGRachel @wanderinglynn @BarbaraBB 😅 I made a bad choice! It was between this and 3y
Librarybelle This one may be the least favorite book read for #ReadingAsia2021 ! 3y
mhillis @Librarybelle 😂😂😂 the blurb made it sound so interesting!! Too much info dumping 3y
DGRachel @wanderinglynn Thanks! I amuse myself when I go full snark in a review, so it‘s gratifying when others are also entertained. 🤣🤣 3y

Sometimes, you really should trust the Litsy ratings on a book. 😒 This was tedious. If you took out all the nonsensical drooling over the rock band, Joy Division, by the MC/narrator it would have been half as long and 100 times more interesting. The solution to the mystery was ridiculous and I spent most of the book wishing the MC had been the murder victim not his ex-girlfriend. #Taiwan #ReadingAsia2021 Bailey is also not impressed.

Librarybelle Love this review! 😂 Way to persevere! 3y

Tel Aviv Noir is seriously letting me down, so I think I‘m going to set it aside for the evening and start Ghost Month. The Litsy ratings aren‘t great, but I‘m hoping I don‘t hate it. 🤞🏻 I don‘t want to fall behind on my July reading goals already!

Birthday book delivery #1: Ghost Month is my #readingasia2021 choice for #Taiwan and Thus Spoke Zarathustra is my latest #BlameItOnDizis #Çukur purchase, as it was featured in last Monday‘s episode.

If you go into this expecting it to focus on the mystery you'll be disappointed. I personally didn't mind that the mystery took a backseat to the author taking us on a journey through the sights, sounds, and tastes of the Taipei Night Market. All the descriptions of the traditions of Ghost Month I found fascinating.

#readingaroundtheworld #Taiwan #nightmarket As a murder mystery it wasn‘t much, but as a flavor filled glimpse at the multi-layered gangster world, the different ethnic rivalries and the night markets of Taiwan it was quite enjoyable.

This is my first #ReadAroundTheWorldChallenge book of 2020! The country for this month is #Taiwan and I chose this noir-inspired mystery to listen to! It certainly has a lot of details on life in Taiwan and Taipei specifically! There are a lot of cultural points made clear and while I can see some being frustrated at the way this slows the pacing, I actually enjoyed these sections. It made for a great fit for the challenge! #AudioColoring

I really wanted to like this one, a murder mystery set in a Taipei market. But I got 45% in and still hadn‘t gotten to the mystery- just a lot of description about the Taipei market, and the lead‘s love of the band Joy Division. Moving on to other things now..

Didn't enjoy this as much as I had hoped. Took some time to get going too.

Anyone else read this? Good so far.

CateKeesling Super scary cover! 8y
Jamesmelvinmitchell @CateKeesling ever read a book because of the cover? I believe I've missed a few good books because of the cover. 8y
CateKeesling I'm definitely guilty of judging books by their covers. The book in reading right now "The Eye of the World" the first in The Wheel of Time series, is a book I never would have picked up based on the cheesy cover. But it was on a friend's bookshelf so I gave it a shot and it's really good so far. 8y
