There is always such a sense of loss in Tolkien's concluding chapters, even when a lot is gained.
I often shed some tears at the end of his stories. It wasn't any different this rime.
There's such a masterful mix of sadness and happyness in this closing chapter.
It always saddens me to live Middle-Earth, but in The Hobbit, l do it with a smile.

I like that, in spite of all the bad things that happened in the last few chapters, things end on a positive note.
The dwarves show their worst and their best in these last chapters, what complex characters they truly are.

I'm always pleasantly surprised of how Tolkien writes battle scenes, which is one of the hardest things to do in storytelling.
He never confuses. I always have the sensation he perfectly knows what's happening and so l know too. He has a great sense of the epic, and still some passages are very personal.
He's fantastic.
Retreading the Hobbit reminds me of how awesome JRR Tolkien was. His ability to create worlds and languages is amazing. I saw some more of the simple humor this time around than I did before. I love this book! #FellowshipOfTolkien #ThereAndBackAgain
I hope everyone has had a chance to finish or is able to catch-up over this weekend.
I just want to say that I loved re-reading this with you all, and at this time of year it seemed like such a good fit...one chapter a day and each chapter a small self contained mini adventure, like an advent calendar of short stories combining into one book.

Started the #11thHourReadathon very late yesterday, but still managed to finished The Hobbit.
And once again l absolutely loved it. This last part really made me think and feel, and l confess l even shade a few tears, in that episode you know.
Bilbo's pure heart and willingness to be useful was so endearing. And also so inspiring.
Loved it. Just loved it once more.

These are such fantastic chapters, and so full of heart.
It says a lot that, after giving up the Arkenstone, what Bilbo dreams about is eggs and bacon.

There's a reason why this part of story sounds so different from the first part. Tolkien wrote it at the end, beginning to end, after a long pause and it is almost a story in its own right. A legend in its own right. Tolkien's love for legends, that crept in in the central episodes of the books, here bold lying came to the fore.
Fantastic!
