Finally getting around to my daily #FellowshipOfTolkien #ThereAndBackAgain reading today. I usually get it in during babes morning feeding but today has been busy. It‘s almost Friday! 😃

As exhausted as I am today (still fatigued by my bout with whatever illness is going around my workplace), I could really do with a short rest in Rivendell myself...
Tolkien‘s watercolor of Rivendell that appeared in some editions of The Hobbit.

“An early conception of the view of Rivendell looking east towards the Misty Mountains than the watercolor” (which I‘ll post next).

I really enjoyed reading about Elrond, and after having read The History of the Hobbit l can almost see the different stages to which sentence belongs.
I wonder whether it wasn't Elrond who -in the end - brought The Hobbit into the legendarium.
I would love an adverb attached to that final “said Thorin.” #ThereAndBackAgain #FellowshipOfTolkien
“Bilbo was sadly reflecting that adventures are not all pony-rides in May-sunshine”

Afraid I'm going to pull a Gandalf on my fellow adventurers and disappear from the party temporarily. Limited time for the next week or so - I was ahead, soon I'll be behind, but I'll catch up again! I'll do my best to catch up on your posts as well.

Tolkien is a master crafter of dialogues. I could read the trolls' episode one hundred times and always enjoy it.
I also love the way Tolkien uses words to create comic effects, even when observing the reality around him.
"He had read of a good many things he had never seen or done."
Reading chapter 1 with Tolkien‘s own illustration of The Hill and Bag End. The meeting between Bilbo and Gandalf is great, and I always enjoy the little history of golf anecdote.
Fun note for today: I happened to log into the web version of Litsy this evening and The Hobbit is a trending book!

It‘s finally settled down enough that I can curl up in my own little hobbit hole and read today‘s chapter, chapter 1.
I still think this is the best “meet cute” for a non-romantic couple I‘ve ever read....and I‘ve always loved the word play here, and how well Tolkien calls out the way we use one simple greeting phrase to mean SO many different things.

It really has been awhile... I clearly remember specific turns of phrase (to “wear a sword instead of a walking-stick” as much as the opening line or the songs), but the overall feel of the first chapter is very different now that I‘m older. Or maybe now that I‘ve read more late 1800s/early 1900s British lit.

“Where did you go, if I may ask?”
“To look ahead,” said he (Gandalf)
“And what brought you back in the nick of time?”
“Looking behind.”
💕Gandalf is the master of enigmatic answers 😂💕

Now, for the perfect ending to my day ? Gandalf & Bilbo's conversation is some of Tolkien's finest work ? This is my favorite quote: "This is a story of how a Baggins had an adventure, and found himself doing and saying things altogether unexpected. He may have lost the neighbors' respect, but he gained - well, you will see whether he gained anything in the end."

I'll have never hidden my favour for the Dwarves. They are much more complex characters that many Tolkien's readers seem to give them credit for.
Thorin is the perfect example. He is a noble man, a brave warrior, a fierce ally. And still there is darkness inside him. More powerful than he thinks.
#FellowshipOfTolkien #ThereAndBackAgain
It may seem easy to think that Gandalf is the quintessential - even the stereotypical wizard. But he is so much his own character. He is so unique. Such a fantastic character.
#FellowshipOfTolkien #ThereAndBackAgain
I'll admit it, the first chapter is one of the best in the book, in my opinion. Bilbo is such a relatable character from the beginning and l adore how he behaves during the 'dwarf crisis' 😂
Both his Baggings and Took side are immediately clear and you just know that spells 'adventure'.
This is still my favorite opening lines to any book. I loved it as a kid, and I still love it today. I remember meeting Bilbo, Gandalf, and the dwarves for the first time, and I think that I still get just as excited now. 😊

I think I found my wedding cake 🐉
#FellowshipofTolkien I thought you all would appreciate this 💚 And how appropriate for this to have showed up when we just started reading The Hobbit 😅
#ThereandBackAgain #YearofTolkien
This is for everyone that is reading chapter 1 today for The Hobbit.😀
I haven't read this in a while. It will be nice to share my favorite book with others, a chapter at a time. Thanks @JazzFeathers for organizing this.

I‘m going on an adventure!!! I‘m so happy to be doing this readalong again with all of you. #FellowshipofTolkien #ThereAndBackAgain
So it begins . . . I‘m so excited to be rereading The Hobbit again and to have so many people joining us!
#ThereAndBackAgain #FellowshipofTolkien
The original thought was ‘there isn‘t enough time,‘ but then it is The Hobbit. The next thought was ‘I have a lot of other books to finish before the end of the year,‘ but then it is The Hobbit. The last thought was ‘It is one of my favorite books from childhood and because of that I‘ve read it more than once,‘ but oh my...IT IS THE HOBBIT!
I‘m all in for the buddy read 👉🏽 #ThereAndBackAgain and hanging out with #FellowshipOfTolkien...Yay!
Starting my reread adventure in hobbit-approved fashion: with snacks!

Our #FellowshipofTolkien is ready for another adventure #ThereAndBackAgain as we reread The Hobbit a chapter a day starting December 1 and start Lord of the Rings on January 3.
We would love to have any other interested readers join us, whether you‘ve read it many times or want to read it for the first time! We‘re an informal readalong group, but we post and discuss with each other regularly so feel free to join in.
#YearsofTolkien
Who's ready to share in an adventure?
The #FellowshipOfTolkien is going #ThereAndBackAgain starting on December 1
We'll be reading The Hobbit one chapter a day in December (see schedule above) and The Lord of the Rings from January 3
Come along! There are treasures to win and all expenses are covered.
@LitsyHappenings
Apparently Amazon (in the US anyway) is encouraging our adventure. If you wanted to join our chapter-a-day read along of this classic starting December 1st, but don‘t have a copy....well, it just happens to be on sale today.

Ah, you've seen that mark on the green door, have you?
That means we're ready for an adventure and we welcome everyone to join in.
It's a journey there and back again, cortesy of a certain Oxford professor you might have heard about. Wizard with words, he is.
The appointed time is right here on December 1.
Be right on time. Starting adventures late it's bad luck, but should you be a bit late. We can't wait further than Bywater.
Make hast!
Our The Hobbit read-a-long (1 chapter a day) starts Dec. 1st 💚 We'd love for you to join our Fellowship 😊

Are you ready for an adventure...
They are nasty & uncomfortable things I hear...
But nevertheless we are arranging one, there and (if we are very lucky) back again...
Anybody interested in joining our party?
We are looking for a good burglar...
The adventure begins Dec 1st, remember to pack your pocket-handkerchief!

So, #FellowshipofTolkien friends, do we have a plan going forward? We‘re all caught up on Sauron Defeated, correct? I know we had discussed the possibility of rereading The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings after all the history and drafts we‘ve read. Thoughts? I would be happy to start over the holidays, or if we want a break I‘ll concentrate on some other things. #YearsofTolkien
Also, I now have more books than will fit on my Tolkien shelf. 📚 😃
Spent this gorgeous Sunday out on the trails with the boyfriend and his doggo for the doggo‘s birthday.
Love this because this is how I feel when my husband tries to get me out of the house 🏡 🤣🤣🤣
Me reading The Hobbit on the beach a few years ago — a banned book that, sadly, I haven‘t finished yet! I keep falling asleep in the forest. 🤦🏻♀️
But I love the writing and the opening was just so magical!
#gratefulreads #bannedbook
📚It was AMAZING! The only thing I didn't like is how short it was! But not short enough for me to not like it. 😊
So here's my first Saturday #bookreport 👍 @Cinfhen
1. Finished Good Omens which has some dated references but still holds up well
2. Read Holes which I loved. I'm always awed by writers who can write in such as economical, stripped down way but still produce something so rich and nuanced
