The Hobbit
The Hobbit | J.R.R. Tolkien
This lavish gift editionof J.R.R. Tolkien's classic features cover art, illustrations, and watercolor paintings by the artist Alan Lee.Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum. Written for J.R.R. Tolkien's own children, The Hobbit has sold many millions of copies worldwide and established itself as a modern classic.

I really enjoyed reading about Elrond, and after having read The History of the Hobbit l can almost see the different stages to which sentence belongs.

I wonder whether it wasn't Elrond who -in the end - brought The Hobbit into the legendarium.

akaGingerK @JazzFeathers Just the one, so I can figure out the sincerity level here! Thank you! 😆 19h
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ... sarcastically, ironically, sincerely, abashedly, reluctantly, perturbedly, imperiously, petulantly, admonishedly, thankfully, quizzically... it could make a world of difference @JazzFeathers 😂. Thorin can be kind of full of himself, so I‘m going with imperiously.🤷‍♀️ (edited) 16h
JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 😂😂 lf l didn't have an idea what kind of character Thorin is, now l would. But then, that's why Tolkien left the blank. It's the mark of a master storyteller to allow space to the reader 😉 9h

Tolkien is a master crafter of dialogues. I could read the trolls' episode one hundred times and always enjoy it.
I also love the way Tolkien uses words to create comic effects, even when observing the reality around him.

"He had read of a good many things he had never seen or done."

Reading chapter 1 with Tolkien‘s own illustration of The Hill and Bag End. The meeting between Bilbo and Gandalf is great, and I always enjoy the little history of golf anecdote.

Fun note for today: I happened to log into the web version of Litsy this evening and The Hobbit is a trending book!

It‘s finally settled down enough that I can curl up in my own little hobbit hole and read today‘s chapter, chapter 1.

I still think this is the best “meet cute” for a non-romantic couple I‘ve ever read....and I‘ve always loved the word play here, and how well Tolkien calls out the way we use one simple greeting phrase to mean SO many different things.

It really has been awhile... I clearly remember specific turns of phrase (to “wear a sword instead of a walking-stick” as much as the opening line or the songs), but the overall feel of the first chapter is very different now that I‘m older. Or maybe now that I‘ve read more late 1800s/early 1900s British lit.

Now, for the perfect ending to my day ? Gandalf & Bilbo's conversation is some of Tolkien's finest work ? This is my favorite quote: "This is a story of how a Baggins had an adventure, and found himself doing and saying things altogether unexpected. He may have lost the neighbors' respect, but he gained - well, you will see whether he gained anything in the end."

I'll have never hidden my favour for the Dwarves. They are much more complex characters that many Tolkien's readers seem to give them credit for.
Thorin is the perfect example. He is a noble man, a brave warrior, a fierce ally. And still there is darkness inside him. More powerful than he thinks.

JazzFeathers Discussing chapter one with a friend who's reading along offline, l realised something that has never occured to me. I adore The way the Dwarves arrive in little groups, with Gandalf directing evtything and Bilbo slowly accepting the situation as his Baggings and Took halves war. That's the same tactic Gandalf will use with Beorn, isn't it?

It may seem easy to think that Gandalf is the quintessential - even the stereotypical wizard. But he is so much his own character. He is so unique. Such a fantastic character.

Daisey I‘m interested to read Gandalf with a slightly different perspective after seeing how his character developed through revisions as well. He became so much more of a unique character over time. 3d
Cathythoughts 👍🏻❤️✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨ 2d
JazzFeathers On my Tolkien FB group we were discussing Gandalf's 'arrogance'. Last September, someone commented that Gandalf seems to act selfishly and just to show off. Personally, l think that self-confidence is part of his character, but that's a different thing from arrogance. As assertive as he may be, he never tries to forse his view on anyone. 2d

I'll admit it, the first chapter is one of the best in the book, in my opinion. Bilbo is such a relatable character from the beginning and l adore how he behaves during the 'dwarf crisis' 😂

Both his Baggings and Took side are immediately clear and you just know that spells 'adventure'.

GrilledCheeseSamurai This first chapter has always been one of my favorite things to read ever! I often do when I'm bored or can't decide what to do. Which often leads to a whole new read through but...oh well. 🤷🏼‍♂️😅 3d

So, #FellowshipofTolkien friends, do we have a plan going forward? We‘re all caught up on Sauron Defeated, correct? Riveted_Reader_Melissa Really random brainstorming: Reading over the holidays....start on Thanksgiving: give thanks to where we‘ve been and the fellowship we‘ve found. I realize that only works for the American calendar and doesn‘t give us long to publicize on Litsy if anyone wants to join in though. Start after the holidays: January 3: Tolkien‘s birthday 🤷‍♀️ 1w

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Ok.. The Hobbit has 19 chapters plus the authors note. So if we start The Hobbit on Dec 1, we could finish by Dec 21, break for Christmas, and then start the Fellowship on Jan 3...sound like a good mix of everybody‘s preferences? @Daisey @JazzFeathers @wordslinger42 @BookwormAHN @llwheeler @tdrosebud 1w
wordslinger42 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds great to me! 💚 1w
Daisey @Riveted_Reader_Melissa That sounds great to me! I do love the idea of starting one of the books on Tolkien‘s birthday. 1w
BookwormAHN Sounds great to me as well 😸 1w
llwheeler Sounds good! 1w
GrilledCheeseSamurai Ooooooh. Can I join in? I'd totally be down for a Hobbit/LOTR re-read. Especially chapter a day buddy reads! 1w
JazzFeathers That is a great schedule, everyone. Loved it. I just reread the Hobbit in September, but l'm more than happy to reread it with all of you 😀 And l really can't wait to reread The Lord of the Rings. Love the idea to start on Tolkien's birthday. 1w
JazzFeathers Also @Daisey did you really mention Tolkien and shelf space in the same sentence? 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 1w
Daisey @GrilledCheeseSamurai Of course we would love to have you join us! The more the merrier! 1w
Daisey @JazzFeathers Well, until the last couple of years, I have very slowly added to my collection. So it is only rather recently that it overfilled its space. I also recently decided to specifically shelve my Tolkien books in the living room instead of my less visible shelves. 1w
JazzFeathers @Daisey A couple of years ago, l bought two new shelves to add to my already existing two Tolkien shelves. I thought it would last me for years. Errrr.... 😶 1w

Me reading The Hobbit on the beach a few years ago — a banned book that, sadly, I haven‘t finished yet! I keep falling asleep in the forest. 🤦🏻‍♀️

But I love the writing and the opening was just so magical!

📚It was AMAZING! The only thing I didn't like is how short it was! But not short enough for me to not like it. 😊

So here's my first Saturday #bookreport 👍 @Cinfhen
1. Finished Good Omens which has some dated references but still holds up well
2. Read Holes which I loved. I'm always awed by writers who can write in such as economical, stripped down way but still produce something so rich and nuanced

3. Actually finished The Hobbit... Really enjoyed it at first but it dragged on a bit for me in the last third
4. Born A Crime audio....just brilliant and glad I chose audio. I actually have about 50 mins left and a pile of ironing... So see you later 😉 Thanks @Cinfhen for setting this up x
