Meredith & Tara attended #yallfest for the first time this past weekend and had a BLAST! They went with their friends, Aliza, Michelle, and Naomi, who are veteran Y‘allfesters, and they fit in a bunch of panels, signings, and of course grabbed a whole lot of ARCs (advanced reader copy) of Young Adult books that are being published next year. (This pic is the book haul for all 5 ladies, and a few of their own books they brought to get signed.)

In this new episode we talk about the pressure of not having read all the classics, and which ones we still want to read. We then check one off that list with this month‘s discussion of The Scarlet Pimpernel and dig into its portrayal of the French Revolution, conflicted marital relationships, and characters‘ weak communication skills. Listen on our website at eclecticreaders.fireside.fm/69 or on Apple Podcasts/podcast apps under Eclectic Readers!

This month we‘re reading The Scarlet Pimpernel, so we‘re going to have a segment during the podcast about classics still on our TBR and if we feel pressure to read books that are considered “classics.” So, what about you? Are you a classics fan? Are there any books you feel like you should read just because they‘re classics? jen_the_scribe Accessibility. I love that everyone still has access to books no matter what financial situation they're in and that kids still have a place to go to nurture their love of reading. 3mo
sprainedbrain I live in a tiny town that has an even tinier library. It‘s open 12 hours total during week, all during my work hours and not at all on the weekend, has an outdated catalog with no ebooks or audiobooks, and doesn‘t participate in my state‘s library share program. Have you all been following this library news and the restrictions Macmillan and other publishers are wanting to put on their ebooks for libraries? What do you think? Do having ebooks available at the library make you less likely to buy ebooks? Let us know your thoughts and we may share them on our next podcast episode. #EclecticQuestion Article links in comments ⬇️

rjsthumbelina I borrow library ebook copies of things that I am not sure I will like. Not having this option would probably mean I would just skip the title altogether! I have found a few of my favorite authors this way - it would be a shame if they stop providing the option. It seems a little on the greedy side 4mo
Karisa Borrowing books is more economical but that is true for ebooks, audiobooks, and print. If it's a book that I really love and want to revisit/annotate, I'll buy it regardless of the media. 4mo
Soubhiville I rarely borrow ebooks, but I borrow audiobooks constantly. I think limiting library borrowing or charging libraries more for ebook use is ludicrous though. 4mo

For me (Meredith), it‘s definitely Fantasy. I love getting swept away into another world! I‘m getting more into Sci-fi as well. #EclecticReadathon

sprainedbrain I read almost anything, but my favorites and most read seem to be historical fiction. 5mo
Geeklet The huge umbrella genre of speculative fiction. I pretty much like every sub genre that falls under that label, from science fiction to fantasy to magical realism to dystopian. I figure I spend enough time in the real world. I‘d rather spend my free time immersed in something different. 5mo
EclecticReaders @sprainedbrain Nice! What are some of your favorites in the Historical Fiction genre? 5mo

EclecticReaders @Geeklet I totally get what you mean about immersing yourself in something different! 5mo
sprainedbrain @EclecticReaders so many! Kate Morton‘s novels, the Outlander series, Follett‘s Pillars of the Earth, the Song of Achilles by Miller, Ian McEwan‘s novels, many many books set in WWII. 5mo
Ruri_kaichou @sprainedbrain I love Pillars of the Earth! And I enjoyed the sequel as well. World Without End? I thought about reading his other books recently 5mo
Ruri_kaichou I love that my palette has grown since being in the book club, but I think my all time fav genre will be fantasy 5mo
sprainedbrain @Ruri_kaichou I‘ve got World Without End on my list to read this year. Looking forward to it. I got so immersed in Pillars! 5mo

Ruri_kaichou I think I skew more towards ebooks but I find all formats beneficial. Like I listen to audiobooks while I work and love my Kindle if I am trying to read when me kids are around. 5mo
jmtrivera Going back and doing some check-ins now! (Not that I can win, but I like racking up points!)
I tend to prefer hard copies and e-books if I'm reading something for the first time. It's really important for me to see and hear everything in my own head first, or I have a hard time paying attention to it, usually. I like audiobooks for rereads though!
5mo
kim.guernsey I like all the formats! but I prefer hard copy for leisurely reading, ebooks for reading on the go. I hardly do audio because I'm not good with listening to a story. I need to see the words. 5mo

It's getting to be on the late side so here's a check-in question to give yourself a little break. Physical copy-wise I have multiple copies of the first half of the Harry Potter series. My husband is gifting me the illustrated copy so I have up to Prisoner of Azkaban. Then I have 2 copies of Goblet of Fire because I found a used hard cover and I only owned the soft cover. #EclecticReadathon

HufflepuffGirl90 I have multiples of all the Harry Potter books (different editions and languages). I also have 5 copies of Wuthering Heights (different editions) 5mo
EclecticReaders @HufflepuffGirl90 that's awesome! Great books to have multiple copies of! There are so many books I would love to have multiple copies of, so I am very strict in what book I get multiples of. 5mo
Geeklet I have two copies of The Forever War. I bought it again because I wanted the SF Masterworks cover. 5mo

Hello friends! Sue here and I hope your readathon is off to a great start! So here's our check-in! The kinds of books I like to read while traveling are fun, light, and easy. Or action-packed or fast-paced. What's yours? #EclecticReadathon

Merethebookgal Hmm, I honestly don‘t get a lot of reading done while traveling, but I agree, it couldn‘t be something to dense or slow. 5mo
kim.guernsey agreed, travel reads are usually mind candy books. easy to consume, no nutritional value 5mo
jmtrivera Yes, I agree! I tend to get my guilty pleasure reads done when travelling - light and fast-paced things. If they're going to be dense, then they better at least be short. I've also learned that flights between DC and Florida are the perfect length for graphic novels. :-) Also, I've stacked up 3 points so far in the scavenger hunt: a cold drink, a hot drink, and a library book. Yay! 5mo
See All 8 Comments
EclecticReaders @Merethebookgal I usually don't get a lot of reading done either but when the kids are sleeping/resting, I can totally sneak in a couple of hours so I like something fast-paced to take advantage of that 😆 5mo
EclecticReaders @kim.guernsey absolutely 5mo
EclecticReaders @jmtrivera what a great way to start the readathon! Way to get stuff done! 5mo
Merethebookgal Oh, I should add a caveat that if it‘s a road trip pretty much all I do is read 😂 hooray for audiobooks! They‘re still usually something light and fun that both my husband and I will enjoy reading. 5mo
EclecticReaders @Merethebookgal audiobooks are so great for road trips! The girls love listening to audiobooks in the car, especially if it's a picture book so they can see pictures and I don't have to read (I get carsick). 5mo

The credit goes to Eva vs the World on Instagram for creating this fun Bingo board, and we thought we‘d share it here for other fellow bookworms to participate. 😊 Screenshot the image and then in your own post use the brush tool to check off the squares you‘ve done. Tag us in your post so we‘re sure to see it! #BookwormBingo
