Biography of X: A Novel | Catherine Lacey
post image
Pickpick

Biography of X is an eclectic mashup of alternative history, art culture, mixed media, and…. Is it love? Or obsession 🧐

C leaves husband for crazy ultra self-important artist X and when X dies, C takes off on a crusade to defend her relationship with X. She finds out much more than she can wrestle with. Does it matter?

I‘m actually quite impressed with what all the author does in telling this extraordinary story.

I wasn‘t sure how I felt about this until I finished it. I thought about it…then I thought some more. And I decided the structure and all the layers were really kind of brilliant (imho). Another winner from the #Tob2023longlist #Pulitzer

BkClubCare Same!! The ending and how it all fell into place OMG 9mo

Grown Ups | Marie Aubert

This short novel adeptly illustrated the fears, insecurities and flaws of two adult sisters coming together for a holiday at their family cabin. I felt deeply for both of them throughout the story while also cringing at the ways they often showed up. An uncomfortable and insightful read. #ToB2023longlist

squirrelbrain I loved this one too, and your review is spot on. 👌 1y
sarahbarnes @squirrelbrain another one that could‘ve made the shortlist! 🥸 1y
BarbaraBB Totally agree. So good. And it packs a punch! 1y

This was my first book by Donoghue, and I was impressed by the quiet, tense prose. It was well-matched to the story, which was a slow burn and ended beautifully. #ToB2023longlist

batsy Glad to see you liked it too 🙂 1y
sarahbarnes @batsy it definitely made me want to read more by her! 1y
batsy Slammerkin is very good, almost like Sarah Waters in a sense. I also enjoyed her short story collections like Kissing the Witch and The Woman Who Gave Birth to Rabbits. Room seems to be her most popular novel but it's probably my least favourite—for reasons I can't quite pin down. 1y
batsy The Sealed Letter and Life Mask are her other two historical novels I enjoyed 🙂 1y
sarahbarnes @batsy thank you so much for these recs! It‘s really helpful to know which ones you enjoyed. I never wanted to read Room, also for reasons I can‘t quite name, and for a long time that‘s the book I associated with her. 1y
