Mehso-so

This book was really HEAVY and at times terrifying!!!
I don‘t read many MG books, nor do I read a lot of fantasy so I‘m not sure if this book is “typical” in it‘s writing and matter.
This book oscillates between juvenile and deeply mature in its content. Akwaeke Emezi raises really important issues & introduces introspective social commentary. Brave & bold but at times provocative. This book feels more suitable for YA & adult audiences.

Librariana I believe my library cataloged it as YA 😊 4y
Cinfhen That seems like a better placement @Librariana what ages is usually classified for MG?? 4y

Suet624 I had no idea she had another book out. 4y
Librariana @Cinfhen - Cindy, I believe we usually classify/catalog MG as ages 8/9 - 12 😊 4y
Cinfhen Thanks @Librariana I stand by my initial impression, this does not seem appropriate for under 12. If you pick it up, I‘d love to hear your thoughts..... Hope you‘re well 💕 4y
ninergrl6 I read a lot of YA & occasionally MG, and I‘d definitely call this YA. Is it marketed as MG?? 4y
Cinfhen I borrowed the book through my library system and they had it classified as MG @ninergrl6 ‼️‼️‼️ 4y
Chrissyreadit What made you rate it so- so? I‘m considering stacking it to my pile. 4y
Cinfhen Because I didn‘t enjoy the reading experience. I thought it was at times VERY juvenile and then it would become SO EMOTIONALLY HEAVY/ I also don‘t like a lot of fantasy and the whole monster from another world didn‘t really feel natural to me @Chrissyreadit I‘d be curious to hear your thoughts if u read it. I didn‘t think this was suitable for the average 10-12 year old reader🤷🏼‍♀️ 4y
Chrissyreadit @Cinfhen that makes sense. It sounds similar to two other books I‘ve read that I enjoyed in terms of plot. I will add it to my TBR but it will be a while before I read it. 4y

This was gifted to me by my lovely friend @Hooked_on_books and it works for the #Pop20 #TransOrNonBinaryAuthor Thanks so much Holly 🌺❣️

Hooked_on_books You‘re welcome! I thought it was great but it kinda ripped my heart out, so be warned! I hope you enjoy it. 4y
StaceyKondla I saw Casey Plett at Wordfest in Calgary a couple years back. She was super lovely and I have this book on my TBR 😊 Love seeing Canadian authors on Litsy 💕 (edited) 4y
Cinfhen This book has lots of #LitsyLove but after 50 pages im not feeling it @StaceyKondla so I‘m taking a little break and will try again at a later time 4y

Pickpick

5/15 #jumpstart2020 @Clwojick @StayCurious

Hilarious, tender, hardhitting, raunchy, respectful, educational - I have no idea how one book did all these. I felt like I‘d made a new best friend but it didn‘t hold back showing dark, traumatic things.

So much respect for how Crystal never excluded any of the LGBTQIA+ community including areas they weren‘t part of or specifically writing about. I so rarely see my bisexuality validated this much!

BobbiB Oh, wow. This review really makes me want to read the book. Especially what you said about validating bisexuality. 5y
