The Stolen Bicycle | Wu Ming-Yi
post image

When asked about the supernatural elements in his writing, Wu Ming-Li answered that literary critics like to interpret his work as magic realism, but Wu doesn‘t think it is. He thinks he is showing that we live in a world that contains wonders. #VWF2019

Above: Holman Wang at a children‘s literature festival in the United Arab Emirates. At the Vancouver Writers Fest today, Wang joked when he showed us this: “The children thought they were seeing a famous Canadian illustrator. They thought I was Jon Klassen.” #VWF2019

Artist Holman Wang explained this photo shoot for the tagged book. It‘s set in Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver and he used scissors to trim the grass to proportional height. #VWF2019

At the Vancouver Writers Fest yesterday, Taiwanese author Wu Ming Yi spoke about his admiration for Margaret Atwood and said she is part of the reason he became a writer. It was a big thing for him when Atwood tweeted in 2013 about his first book to be translated into English (tagged). #VWF2019

At the Good Reads YA Edition event at the Vancouver Writers Fest, moderator Shannon Oziny said (of the passage Henstra read from the tagged book): I know we‘ll be touching on some difficult topics today but, as a librarian, the most difficult is that scene of kicking around a library book. #VWF2019 🇨🇦

BookishTrish I work with Shannon - she had such a way with words! 5y

Reinventing the Novel at #VWF2019
Anakana Schofield: The novel is the place to posit philosophical questions. It‘s the place to subvert & disrupt. We‘ll never know what the novel can be; that‘s the nature of art making.
Bindu Suresh: There‘s a lot of unpopulated space to explore between established forms like between poetry & short fiction.
Sara Peters: Interested in how the novel can become more fluid. Sound & sense are inextricable when writing.
