5 Stars • Welcome to the Monkey House is a 1968 collection of 25 short stories by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., blending science fiction, satire, and social commentary. The title story depicts a dystopian world with overpopulation and government-enforced anti-sex drugs. Rebel Billy the Poet kidnaps a Suicide Parlor hostess to restore human connection, critiquing societal control. ⬇️

suvata Other stories, like "Harrison Bergeron" and "EPICAC," explore themes of government overreach, technology‘s impact, and human resilience through sharp humor and irony.

#Read2025

Listened to for #AuthorAMonth September #KurtVonnegut Overall, I enjoyed this college commencement speeches, although they do get repetitive, especially toward the end. With the two stories read & listened to previously, I feel like I have read enough for now. Would I try one of his better known novels at some point? Maybe.🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm feeling this quote about #poetry. I'm learning to appreciate poetry more these days, but it seems like such a personal thing, more so than any prose.

Whew! Is this book outdated or what? Most of the stories in this book (about 75%) are good to great. Some stories, however, either completely lost me or were just not that good. And then there are the few that are just ewww. Take the story that is also the title of book—a bit misogynistic or worse? Set in the future, a 70+ woman is a virgin, who is kidnapped and then “subjected” to sex (it‘s not apparently meant to be considered “rape” from the ⬇️

Texreader way in which the story is told), so she can eventually learn how wonderful it is. Then there‘s the story told about the evil Chinese ruler who forces kidnapped American soldiers and the commander‘s family to be the chess pieces moved by the commander. Those taken out of the game are taken out of the land of the living. The evil foreigners are stereotypical. His famous Harrison Bergeron is one of several interesting dystopias. Miss Temptation is ⬇️ 1mo
Texreader a favorite, and one that every incel should read. It‘s a great lesson in how to be the true you and how to treat others. Unready to Wear is pretty cool and reminds me of an old Star Trek episode: what happens when some of humanity learn to escape their bodies and continue to thrive? After Monkey House I was ready to bail but I‘m glad I stuck with it for the good stories that prevail in this collection. #authoramonth @Soubhiville (edited) 1mo

Bailedbailed

Well.

I got to a quarter deep and just couldn‘t continue. I‘m sure there‘s more inviting Vonnegut to try instead but this was all that was available in my library at this moment. I told myself I‘d allow one author to be DNF if situation called, I guess this one‘s it for me. #AuthorAMonth

Graywacke My 1st Vonnegut, back in the 1990‘s. But I enjoyed it then. 🙂 1mo

Bailedbailed

Billed as extremely funny, I was so looking forward to listening to this book. Alas, I started it right after reading his If This Isn't Nice, What Is? I felt so preached at in that book, so when it started up again with this book I bailed. Maybe I‘ll try it again someday but it just didn‘t work for me this month. On another note, I am enjoying his short stories that I‘m currently reading. #authoramonth @Soubhiville

Kurt Vonnegut‘s biography starts this audiobook, which I found to be very good, not knowing anything about him—even though I knew he was a famous author who had a big impact in the 1960s and 70s. These are mostly his commencement speeches at colleges. The first speech ends with a discussion of how politicians use hate like a drug. In the second speech, I was astounded at how he, an atheist, respected Jesus is the prince of peace. Sadly, after ⬇️

Texreader those, they are repetitive, preachy, and dismal. I was saddened by this given they were given at commencements. I would have left my graduation ceremony so depressed. And could he not even try to come up with new material for each ceremony? And as much as I loved the first speeches, I found I disagreed with him more than not. A very hard book to review. A pick for the excellent first two speeches. #authoramonth 1mo
