I've been forgetting to post my #BookspinBingo lists lately. 😅

Here's my December list. I have a multitude of christmas or winter books to choose from, so I'll go with mood reading for this month.

I have buddyreads for #NaturaLitsy #VirginiaBloomsberries #BookedInTime #SheSaid #AAM #LosersClub #HashtagBrigade #QueerBC 📚

Starting with the tagged. 🙂

Oof, what a powerful and heartbreaking read. Joan Didion writes about experience, grief, and family like no other and her books manage to affect me at a deep level, staying with me a long time. This is one I hadn‘t yet read, so thankful that the #AAM challenge had me read her again. With my parents in that “blue night” era, this really resonated and Insee glimpses of myself there too. And yes, that is my undecorated tree 🤫 @Soubhiville

Soubhiville Glad you liked it. And your tree has lights, that counts as beginning decorations! 1w
CogsOfEncouragement I‘ve read Play It As It Lays, but was unfamiliar with this title. I just watched a movie a couple days ago and one of the characters was reading this book, so I looked it up and it indeed fit nicely with some themes in the movie. Always amusing to hear about something and then feel like I‘m seeing it everywhere. (Movie title: Stuck In Love) 1w
SamAnne I have this from the library! You are prompting me to begin reading. 1w

Parable of the Sower | Octavia E. Butler

Pickpick

My goodness, why did it take me so long to read this book? It may be the best dystopian novel I‘ve ever read. Compelling and thoughtful, I love how Butler gradually reveals this world through the characters and how complex and flawed they are while still making them redeemable. I‘m waiting for the next book, so happy Butler was chosen for #AAM @Soubhiville

Soubhiville That‘s great! You‘ve made me want to read it! 2mo
zezeki This has been on my TBR for a while, but I am a little scared to read it currently. 😅 2mo

Kurt Vonnegut: Letters | Dan Wakefield, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

I'm feeling this quote about #poetry. I'm learning to appreciate poetry more these days, but it seems like such a personal thing, more so than any prose.

Cat's Cradle: A Novel | Kurt Vonnegut

Mehso-so

My #AAM choice for Kurt Vonnegut was a bit of a miss for me. Strange and quirky, it was a little too out there for me, the wild twists and turns kept taking me out of the story. I‘ve really enjoyed Breakfast of Champions when I read it years ago so this one might just not have been for me. #audio @Soubhiville

I‘m listening to this audiobook. OMG everybody should hear this. It‘s a collection of Vonnegut‘s graduation addresses. It starts with a wonderful biography of Vonnegut. And his speeches are humorous and deep. The first speech ends with a discussion of how politicians use hate like a drug. So meaningful now. I‘ve only just started the second one and I‘m astounded and love how he, an atheist, explains why Jesus is the prince of peace. #authoramonth

Texreader P.S. I‘m going to have to find this book in print and just frame it. I never dreamed I‘d be such a Vonnegut fan. ♥️♥️♥️ 3mo
willaful The intro to the book I'm listening to talks about what an important moral voice he was. A very good time to become a fan. 3mo
ChaoticMissAdventures So glad you are enjoying him! He is one of my all time favorites, I even have "So it goes" tattooed on me. An empathetic genius. Can't wait to see what you think of his fiction. 3mo
Soubhiville How cool to find a new connection to an author through #AAM! 3mo

Monday Or Tuesday | Virginia Woolf

Bailedbailed

I tried Virginia Woolf for the first time and she is definitely not for me. I hope other #AuthorAMonth readers have better luck!

TheBookHippie 🙃 I adore her. Sorry it didn‘t work for you. 5mo
Soubhiville @TheBookHippie It‘s ok! I‘ve found so many other authors through #AAM, there‘s bound to be one that misses every once in a while. 📚🙂 (edited) 5mo
Sace I feel better seeing this. I‘ve spent today debating whether to bail or not. I might give her one more day, but I‘ve been struggling with her. 5mo

ChaoticMissAdventures I liked her Mrs Dalloway, but her racism has always been an issue with me and I have struggled to get into any others. 5mo
Soubhiville @Sace I felt like the language was too dense. I was trying so hard to understand what she meant that it wasn‘t enjoyable at all. Did people ever talk like this or was she trying to make her works somewhat inaccessible? I‘d love to hear theories. 5mo
AmyG Yeah, I read one of her books, forgot which one, but she is not for me either. 5mo
Gissy I think the same. I will try some books I own but I don‘t feel that passion for her writing style as other people do🤷🏽‍♀️There are authors and writing style for every reader🙌📚 5mo

Starter Villain | John Scalzi

Pickpick

I haven't read a Scalzi that didn't make me cackle with laughter and this was no exception! I really love the character of the bumbling new manager who's in over his head. The cats and the dolphins were of course wonderful but I loved the mystery and spy novel of it all as well.
I'm glad #AuthorAMonth made me finally listen to this one, I've had it for a while. Plus Wil Wheaton's narration was the cherry on top! #AAM @Soubhiville

Texreader Yay!! So glad it was a hit with you!! 5mo
BethM I need to read more Scalzi. What I‘ve read I‘ve enjoyed. 5mo

James: A Novel | Percival Everett

Pickpick

My goodness! Fantastic! I completely understand accolades, awards, and astonishment that this book has received. I agree with others who have suggested this be taught alongside Huck Finn. Everett deftly managed to honor Twain‘s work while pointing out its flaws and shortcomings with care and love. #AAM #authoramonth @Soubhiville
