The United states has become ungovernable not because of political differences or protest or a lack of civility but because this is a country unwilling to protect and care for its citizens--its women, its racial minorities and especially its children.

When politicians talk about civility and public discourse what they're really saying is that they would prefer for people to remain silent in the face of injustice.

TheBookHippie This exactly. 3d
Faranae The discourse of “civility“ has always been used to suppress and oppress the vulnerable and the powerless. I just wish we didn't have to teach this lesson the hard way over and over and over... 2d
willaful @Faranae I'm beginning to think it an intrinsic trait of humanity that we *never learn*. 2d

I highly enjoy Roxane Gay's non-fiction. Her writing style is very approachable and clear, and I never feel condescended to. I just love her.

Thank you so much, @Soubhiville ! I‘ve been out of town and so finally had time to check my mailbox and was so happy to see your generous gift from the #AAM 2024. I‘m thrilled to receive both books and I love the bookmark and stickers. I love participating in the #authoramonth challenge and winning a prize just made it all the sweeter. Thanks again!

Soubhiville You‘re welcome! Thanks for participating! 1mo

I am absolutely living these Lord Peter Whimsey books. They're so unexpectedly hilarious! I'm so glad this was a pick for #aam.

This was just okay for me. The mystery was pretty solid but slow (could have been the narrator) and it wasn‘t good enough to make up for the pretty consistent racism all the way through. I recognize that some of that is the time period in which it was written but, still no. #AAM #authoramonth @Soubhiville

#AuthorAMonth readers, we have come to the final week of 2024. Our final week of Terry Pratchett. I hope you‘ve found something you enjoyed by him.

With the New Year we will move on to our January author, Dorothy L Sayers. I‘ll be seeing what my library has by her, how about you?

It‘s also time to finalize your #AAM google form. I will be looking at results and drawing and announcing winners on January 4th. All the rules are on the form ⬇️

Soubhiville Can someone please comment that the link and form have worked ok for you? (Or haven‘t if that‘s the case) 2mo

AllDebooks Thank for another great year's reading new and favourite authors. I really enjoyed it x 2mo
dabbe Is it Sayers or Austen? 2mo
mom2bugnbee I fell off of the wagon this year, but I'm excited to jump back in in 2025! Thank you for always organizing so well! 2mo
mom2bugnbee @dabbe I think that the graphic is for 2024 - Jane Austen was our author this past January. SYers is Jan 2025. 2mo
dabbe @mom2bugnbee Shit. As a former English teacher, you think I'd read the WHOLE graphic. Sheesh. 🙄 Thanks! 😂 2mo
mom2bugnbee @dabbe Haha! No worries! 😂 2mo

I forgot how much this book rocks. Vimes is such an intriguing, hilarious character, and Lady Sybil...ADORE her. Everything about this book just shocks the hell out of me. Considering when it was published, Pratchett's stance on transgender rights is fucking fabulous. I don't think I caught that the first time I read this. People underestimate the ability of SFF to make a goddamn statement, even if it is “only“ genre fiction. ⬇

gossamerchild Sorry, I get a little sweary (no, autocorrect, I did NOT mean “sweaty“) when I'm feeling passionate, and intellectual snobbery and transphobia PISS ME RIGHT THE FUCK OFF.

Anywhoo, fantastic book, highly recommended. #aam #terrypratchett @soubhiville

This was absolutely lovely. One of my favorite aspects of a SAA book is her emphasis on the importance of female friendships. Loved this.

AmyG I like her, too. I have only read two of her books but definitely want to read more. 3mo
gossamerchild @AmyG I'm constantly surprised by how much I enjoy her! 3mo
