This took me awhile to read, for some reason my mind just kept wandering, even though it was a good read

Dark, even for this series. Scotland in winter, and the world of DS McRae is even darker. Although there were laugh out loud moments with the black humor of people doing thier best to survive horrible situations.

This was a solid crime novel.
The interactions between the characters was good, you see some of DS McRae‘s backstory (this is the first book), and the search for the killer was interesting.
I do think that trigger warnings are needed for this as the blurb doesn‘t really mention the SA that crops up. It‘s a bold move to start a potential crime series with child murder and abuse… but based on how long it has been going it has paid off!

Best one of the series so far for me. Ultra dark noir, really, but the black humor had me laughing out loud even when appalled by what had just happened.
Not for the faint of heart.

Oh my. Talk about messed up serial killer investigation. Nothing goes right. Clues that lead to nothing, people getting killed right and left, and the cops running around attempting to get a handle on this killer.
Definitely not for the faint of heart. Blood and gore and cooking humans. Great Tartan Noir!
“Detective Chief Inspector Roberta Steel got caught fitting up Jack Wallace – that‘s why they demoted her and quashed his sentence. Now he‘s back on the streets and women are being attacked again.
The top brass have made it very clear that if Detective Sergeant Steel goes anywhere near him, she‘ll be thrown off the force for good.”
What‘s up with Sergeant Logan McRae? Is his luck going to change? Let‘s hope so. #LoganMcRae #Scotland #dark #funny
“Trouble is coming…
Sergeant Logan McRae‘s team find a body dumped in the woods – but is it the missing businessman they‘ve been searching for, or something far more sinister? It doesn‘t help that his ex-boss is taking over the case, a new Superintendent has it in for him, and Professional Standards are looming.”
“One mistake can cost you everything…When you catch a twisted killer there should be a reward, right? What Acting Detective Inspector Logan McRae gets instead is a ‘development opportunity' out in the depths of rural Aberdeenshire.
Welcome to divisional policing - catching drug dealers, shop lifters, vandals and the odd escaped farm animal…but DCI Steel wants him back on her team.”
