This is a pretty lively summary of readings about discoverers and “discoverers”, explorers and mapmakers. Inherently a volatile mix of political chicanery, the hubris of men that think it‘ll be fun to sail off the edge of the world, scurvy, occasional deaths by polar bear, and the vicissitudes of pre-industrial economics, expansionism, and mercantilism, I found myself grimly laughing at all these misadventures.

Read it.

Presenting avocado toast on homemade whole wheat bread, with moonblush tomatoes.

I‘m still really enjoying THE SPIRES OF TURRIS, but I haven‘t had much with-eyeballs reading time these last couple days. I‘m hoping to make up for that later this afternoon.

Scone + SF. I read maybe a third of THE SPIRES OF TURRIS a few years back, then decided I wasn‘t in the right mood for it. (I‘d just finished another stellar SF series in a totally different mode and all I really wanted was more of that.) Fast forward to last night and I‘m in exactly the right mood for it. Hurray!

I‘m gonna post a book (or series) from my TBR every day until I‘ve shared the lot. No descriptions. No explanations. Just a whole bunch of books I haven‘t read yet.

This is Day 34.

I thought this quote from Papa Hemingway (he wrote a forward to this biography) epitomized #adventure. No matter what you think of his writing, Hemingway was an #adventurer. #quotsynov17

DGRachel I ❤️ Papa. I actually drove my sorority sisters to Isla Mirada from Key West, then turned around and went back to Key West by myself to tour his house on Spring Break my senior year of college. 😊 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @DGRachel Great story - and I‘m sure the house was worth it! I was there decades ago, but more recently we went to the Hemingway museum in his birthplace of Oak Park, IL. The museum and his childhood home are about a block away from each other and both were so interesting. 7y
Leftcoastzen Six toed cats in key west! 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Leftcoastzen It‘s not uncommon to find them further north in Florida also. I lived quite a few hours drive north and had some friends with “Hemingway” cats. 7y
