The play opens with a watchman lamenting fate, who then says of his queen, "That woman--she manoeuvres like a man". You know you're in for something quite dreadful. The first play in the trilogy known as The Oresteia hits hard with violence, murder, & Cassandra uttering chilling prophecies.
batsy I read the translation by Robert Fagles, & the whole cacophony of dread & lamentation--by the chorus of elders, Cassandra, & Clytemnestra herself before she transforms into an assured, single-minded, revenge-driven murderer--imbues the play with so much atmosphere. Fagles also chooses to dedicate this tragedy to his parents, which is quite the nice touch. 2y
