Solid non fiction resource for personal and organizational education, great on #audio. We‘ll researched and balanced information on Ageism and how our own concerns about our aging can negatively influence how others see us and how we see ourselves. I had several aha moments while listening and the additional resources she provides add even more value. If you are considering DEI in your workplace or community, this is a great perspective to add.

When this book was delivered yesterday, I had no recollection of ordering it! It seems that I have a worrisome habit of buying things on my phone in the early morning before I rise. And... I have told myself to refrain from adding even more books to the unread books I already own! I will say that it does look like a good read! #doingmybest #bookmail

Suet624 It looks really good! 3y

"As Marina Gorbis, executive director of the Institute of the Future, puts it, 'Productivity is for machines.'"

Yes!!!! I'm learning so much in every page of this book, but this sentence most affected me this morning. Human beings are not machines to be used up and thrown out when our bodies can't keep up with demand. Our minds and experiences matter. And why use up and break down our bodies too soon with mindless tasks when a machine can do it?

This book gave me a different perspective on aging and the fact that everyone has their own idea of getting older and what their retirement(or non retirement) will look like. I feel less frustrated that my mother isn‘t having an active later life, but this book allowed me to see that she is happy anyway. What‘s good for her wouldn‘t be for me and that‘s okay.

Anna40 Thanks for your post! Such an important topic! 7y

An interesting thought on #privilege and #racism, #sexism, #hetero-sexism, #classism, #ageism, and #ableism. Probably more. Its not the only thing that perpetuates all these oppressions, but it seems like one that would be holding back people who want to reach out and bridge the gap. What do you think?

BookishFeminist I agree with this. I think feeling shame makes it about you and prevents you from genuinely connecting with other people. An example of this is white guilt- it doesn't really help anyone because it puts the focus on white people's feelings rather than just holding them accountable to do better. I have more complex thoughts on this since it's a topic with a lot of gray area but I agree with this overall sentiment. Love Brene Brown. 8y
WOCreads Yeah the shame thing isn't helpful, especially since apparently we are now supposed to be feeling sorry and guilty too that white straight people have privilege? We need to change the system foremost but yes on a personal level empathy is key and one reason I think reading diversely is so important!😃 8y
BookishFeminist @Ifyoucanreadthis_Bina 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 yes!! It's so destructive for people to feel sorry for having privilege. You can't help it! But you don't have to make a point of it and unlearn things you do from your privilege and share its benefits as best you can. Empathy is the most important like you say & shame undercuts empathy. 8y
heatherspoetlife Its funny that you mention white guilt. The next paragraph actually goes on to explain that exact phenomenon and why it doesn't help anyone. The section I took the quote from covers how someone can empathize instead. 8y
