Daughter of Sparta | Claire Andrews

Just finished last night. A retelling of the Daphne story she is a powerful female MC who is not swayed by the charms of Apollo, not intimidated by the seemingly insurmountable task of saving Olympus and not phased by the mistrust thrown her way for being an outsider in Sparta. Fast paced, emotional, and a satisfying character journey. #recentlyread #nospoilers #retelling #recommendsday

This is a terrific book - a narrative nonfiction history of the Apollo program told mainly through the astronauts. The book will win over jaded resistant readers and often keep us glued. The astronauts are super smart, but also foolish and emotionally distant.

One thing that struck me was the scale of the moonscape. Pike‘s Peak sized mountains outside the landers.

Bookwomble Another book I loved reading! Have you been sneaking into my library while I've not been looking? 😄 3mo
Graywacke @Bookwomble that‘s funny! I used an audiobook. So I would have had to steal your book and then find a reader. It is terrific. 3mo

My new audiobook, from 1993. Yes, I am partially listening to this because the author and I share last names.

Ruthiella Bronson Pinchot is a great narrator. Who knew Balkie had it in him? 😅 4mo
Graywacke @Ruthiella I‘m enjoying him. He does a funny thing where he tries to imitate the voice he‘s reading - Tom Hanks, JFK… 4mo

If you‘re reading this for insights on the Apollo 13 mission don‘t. However if you want fun stories about astronaut training from a guy with a laid back attitude this is worth a read. I loved the stories about the different places they traveled to study geology before going to the moon. I also appreciated his thoughts about climate change at the end too.

My October pick for #12BooksOf2024 is Apollo 13, by Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger. A fascinating, suspenseful read. I was inspired to watch the movie as well, and that was also great.

mom2bugnbee Had you never seen the movie? It's in my top 10 of all time. One of my favorite Tom Hanks performances. (He's my favorite.) 8mo
rabbitprincess @mom2bugnbee Nope! I‘m not much of a movie watcher 😅 But I agree with your assessment that it‘s a great film. 8mo

Loved this! Even though I knew roughly how this story ended, the journey there made for a suspenseful read. Great work by Lovell and Kluger.

Not my favorite of the series but still good enough. This one is set at a house party and is set on Apollo and Cassandra.

I will keep reading this series because they‘re a very good escape for me.
