My current read very entertaining but I never cease to be amazed how bad a system monarchy was for governance and how utterly lacking in dignity the so called nobility were. In every Aristocratic family tree are a bunch of grovelling scyopants who lickspittled their way to wealth and power.

I always think of DEAD POETS SOCIETY when I read this one. 💙

TheSpineView I totally get that reference! Excellent choice!😍 4mo
TheLudicReader We're showing that movie to our grade 10 kids next week. I love that they've never seen it 4mo

dabbe @TheLudicReader My favorite unit was teaching Romanticism, Transcendentalism, Anti-Transcendentalism, and Gothic to the juniors (we do American lit all year with them). And DPS was a big part of it. I miss teaching units like that and seeing the students' reactions to something they've never read/seen before, but I miss NOTHING other than that. 😍 4mo

This is basically a fresh look at the Stuart dynasty. The 17th century really was a tumultuous time for England, Scotland and Ireland. The author really digs into the details of religious strife and social upheaval. There‘s plague! There‘s fire! And that‘s just 1666! If you want to know the difference between the Protectorate and the Glorious Revolution this book will set you straight! 🍊👑🔥🐀

This book has been on my TBR for YEARS. And i loved it. I think if you enjoyed Wolf Hall or Crimson Petal and the White, you might like this too. Robert Merivel is a London medical student in the seventeenth century. A lucky chance sees him smiled upon by the king, fated to experience both the highs and lows of this inequitable age. Merivel is a bon vivant - which is often enjoyable - but Tremain has something to say about complacency too.

rwmg I remember hearing about that when it first came out but then I forgot about it. Wishlisted 8mo
