Pickpick

A well-researched history of the LDS and FLDS churches bracketed by the murders committed by two Fundamentalists, this book is very good for what it is. However, I was expecting (and wanted) a true crime book, so it was a bit of a challenge for me to push through. Don‘t miss the author note and appendix at the end.

squirrelbrain I found some of this book a challenge too, and not just because of the difficult subject matter. I *will* post my review soon.... 5y
BarbaraBB I did miss the appendix. Will get back to it! 5y
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB The LDS church got an ARC before publication and were not happy with his book (since they didn‘t get to control it). They published a nasty review of it. The appendix is their review and his rebuttal. It‘s interesting. 5y

Page 15, about Mormon fundamentalists.

Property.

If it get through this book without throwing it, it will be a miracle.

Soubhiville Ugh. 5y
BarbaraBB Horrible. This book makes me furious. I can‘t believe it‘s not fiction what I‘m reading. How can this be happening right now?! 5y
squirrelbrain I‘ve actually finished the book now but haven‘t reviewed it as yet as I don‘t really know how to... 😬 5y

Kayla.Adriena 🤢🤬 5y
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB I‘ve been thinking the same thing. If it were fiction, I would find it so ridiculous and over the top that I probably would bail. Isn‘t that interesting? 5y
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain I think I may have to read in shorter bursts because I keep getting angry at the book. I‘m impressed that you‘ve finished already. I look forward to your (eventual) review! 5y
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain I can understand. How to review this?! 😳 5y

100 pages in to this #bannerbuddy read and, gosh, it‘s scary stuff...

I‘m finding it fascinating learning about all of the different sects within the Church, along with their different beliefs and differing levels of fundamentalism.

BarbaraBB As @Suet624 predicted, I am upset and angry a lot reading this book. It‘s got nothing to do with religion, it‘s rape and child abuse. I think. But I may not be objective. What do you think, co-readers? 5y
julesG You have the “airlounger“ out. I still have to dare to fill mine. So far I've only carried it around in its bag hoping one of the kids wants to fill it. --- From what @BarbaraBB said, I probably won't read this book. I'd be tearing my hair out. 5y
Suet624 @BarbaraBB I still get mad when I think about this book. A horrible “cult” where men rule and women and children are subservient. (edited) 5y

MicheleinPhilly I haven‘t started yet but I read the first 40 pages a while back. I put it down precisely because it was making me rage-y. @BarbaraBB @Suet624 I also have a pretty MASSIVE chip on my shoulder when it comes to the LDS anyway as I was living in CA in 2008. 5y
BarbaraBB @MicheleinPhilly There is a lot of LDS in CA, I just read. Where I live there is no LDS to speak of so it does sound fascinating but horrible too. 5y
squirrelbrain There is a large community of LDS where I live too, but not much is known about them.... 5y
squirrelbrain @julesG yes the air lounger has been very comfortable for a day‘s reading! You should definitely try it... oh and try looking elegant getting in and out of it, rather than an upside down beetle like I do! 😬🤣😁 5y
julesG I'll try to be elegant. Will let you know how that goes. 5y
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain Really? That‘s interesting! I just read many European LDS withdraw after radicalization in the US. On Google I found there is one LDS temple in my country. (edited) 5y

The weekend has started and with it the Banner Buddyread. Let‘s try to finish this one this week and share our thoughts with hashtag #bannerbuddy. If you wanna join us, do so!

I just read the prologue (I didn‘t know the story) and Googled Dan Lafferty. Scary man!

MicheleinPhilly What‘s the schedule? Should we just read the whole book this week and discuss next weekend? 5y
BarbaraBB Sounds good to me. I will be travelling though next weekend so not sure if I will be able to join the discussion. 5y
Rachel_nyc I read this book years ago but found it fascinating (and disturbing). Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. 5y

vivastory I'm really looking forward to reading this one. I'm definitely in the mood for some great nonfiction. 5y
squirrelbrain I‘ve just arrived at our campsite for the next week... nearly finished setting up so will be able to start soon.... 5y
