3.7/5

AndreaEfres 😳4.3/5
“I know some Big Words,
I'll teach them to you.“

This piece of literature is written in prose and can be counted as realistic fiction and it is great for high-order thinking ESL students who need big vocabulary words to retain in their everyday development. Jamie Lee Curtis has written multiple picture books for children, yet this one captured my eye because of the message behind it.

AndreaEfres This book is best suited for K5 and even for ELL students who are over achievers (like myself).

LAFS.5.W.3.8 Recall relevant information from experiences or gather relevant information from print and digital sources; summarize or paraphrase information in notes and finished work, and provide a list of sources. This standard helps us connect to a more relevant society where students are grasping with the fast use of technology.

AndreaEfres UDL (2.5) Illustrate through multiple media. With the use of visuals, the longer words become easier on the students since they can relate to what it is depicting.

DrSpalding When you say K5 I assume you mean kindergarten through fifth grade. This book is certainly for the primary grades, kindergarten through second would be most appropriate. Another helpful website resource. You found excellent resources in the majority of your posts! 3y

Big Words for Little People is a fun RF book to use as both a RA and PR. This book can enhance students‘ vocabulary because it is full of new big words! After performing a RA or having PR, students can pair up and use this synonym sheet (https://www.lessonplanet.com/teachers/big-words-for-little-people)to compare the words within the book, to words they previously knew; which will have them activate their background knowledge.

OliviaBuck UDL 2.1- clarify vocabulary and symbols works well with this book because students are clarifying the vocabulary terms by reading the book and completing the synonym sheet. EL strategy 11- place language in meaningful context also works well with this book. #ucflae3414sp21 3y

“I know some Big Words. I‘ll teach them to you. Although you are small, you can use Big Words too.” The New York Times best-selling team of Curtis and Cornell have brought us an RF, eye-catching, picture book that celebrates words; teaching kids that they shouldn‘t be afraid of big words. The illustrations perfectly align with the vocabulary to help emerging readers comprehend what is going on while portraying events that students can relate to.

TabathaA Best as a RA, using UDL principle 2.1 (clarify vocabulary and symbols), and EL 5 & 17 (teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts and provide contextual support through audio visuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language, and facial expressions). 3y
TabathaA There are several resources available at TeachingBooks (https://www.teachingbooks.net/tb.cgi?tid=14503) including a story map, activities, and a teacher guide. You can also enjoy the author reading her work to a group of children, as well as providing a bit of insight to the adults, at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eG2u5rry55c. #UCFLAE3414SP21 3y
OliviaBuck I read this book and absolutely loved it! It not only teaches great vocabulary but also teaches kids about patience, privacy, and other important things to know 3y

Karissacurrier I love all of the resources that can be used with this book! It seems like a great book to get students involved in many activities. Your ELs you chose align with this book very well, and I feel they can be easily implemented when completing an RA! 3y
Sdemps I think that it is great how this book expands students vocabulary in such an interesting way. 3y
AlexRobinson I saw a few of our peers read this for their teach live presentations and I fell in love with it each time I heard it! SUCH a great book to teach big vocabulary, how to break apart vocabulary, emotions and feelings, and so many other fun concepts! Watching now students reacted to the teachlive also gave a good idea of how students would potentially react to such a book and activities you could do because of it! 3y
PatriciaS I loved doing the read aloud with this book. It's a good book for teaching vocabulary words, very colorful and related to things students can associate with 3y

I was initially drawn to the colorful illustrations. Once I read through, I was pleasantly surprised at the celebration of words and the way in which it went about introducing new words to young readers. The content speaks to experiences that many of us can relate to. And at the end, reminding us of the biggest word of all - LOVE.

Big Words for Little People by Jamie Lee Curtis and Laura Cornell promotes advanced vocabulary and opens up new doors for children. The illustrations help paint a picture that is relatable for kids to help them understand. UDL 2.1 and 3.3 are in this book because if helps clarify vocabulary and students visualize so they can better comprehend the text. https://youtu.be/S1y_ppKRXf8 is a terrific video of Jamie Lee Curtis speaking about her book.

DrSpalding Initial post was late. Be sure to use the rubric. You need resources, universal design and English learner strategies etc. Take a look at some of your peers‘ posts as well as my model. 4y
CameoD Esol strategy 20 would work well with this book. You could introduce advanced vocabulary before the RA, and ensure if they have questions, you‘ll answer them. https://www.lessonplanet.com/search?keywords=big+words+for+little+people is a wonderful tool as a list of words that are in the book. You can discuss and explain to the class. 4y

Big Words for Little People is a realistic-fiction book written by Jamie Lee Curtis and Laura Cornell. This #1 New York Times best-selling team helps little people communicate in a big person's world. From big words such as “impossible“, “consequence“, and “privacy“ to shorter words that hold a bigger meaning within such as “love“ and “family. This book would be a great read-aloud choice as it helps build students' vocabulary!

bsiqueira A read aloud with your class is a great strategy to use in order to assure ALL your students are building their vocabulary. This book seems like it goes above and beyond to help students form a strong vocabulary. Great job! 4y
DrSpalding Your picture is fun! Thank you! You need more of a summary to tell us what the book is about. Your principles and strategies align! You need to expand on your wonderful resource included. How can this be used with your book in the classroom? Be sure to explain. 4y
AshleyH -UDL strategies I would apply in the read-aloud are 2.1 + 3.3 which involves clarifying vocabulary and providing information processing and visualization.

-ESOL students would benefit by seeing the visualizations by new vocabulary words. EL strategy #5.
