If you love the infamous Eric Carle and his art style, you will absolutely love A Stone Sat Still. In fact, Brendan Wenzel, the author of this piece is currently featured in the Eric Carle museum at the gift shop. This story is unique because instead of the main character going on a journey, the journey comes to the main character. Who is the main character? A single stone that can be viewed from many angles.

AndreaEfres As for elementary education, this story is great for early readers in grades 1 and 2. It can be used for growing vocabulary knowledge for concepts of color, size and function.

It would be a great idea to use this book for Reading/English class time because it teaches the reader to decipher figurative language, comparing and contrasting elements, linking cause and effect, and looking at perceptions. 3y

DrSpalding Just by looking at the front cover of this book you know it is not science fiction. This is realistic fiction (based in truth) at its very best! Scholastic is a high-quality resource that you should continue to use in the future. Again the universal design principle including the verbiage and decimal is appropriate however you are missing the English learner strategies. 3y

Jamie Lee Curtis has written multiple picture books for children, yet this one captured my eye because of the message behind it.

LAFS.5.W.3.8 Recall relevant information from experiences or gather relevant information from print and digital sources; summarize or paraphrase information in notes and finished work, and provide a list of sources. This standard helps us connect to a more relevant society where students are grasping with the fast use of technology.

If you have reached this point of the latest reviews I can say with confidence that you are in good heads since Ghost-Spider, even hiding in her mask, has made another return picking up exactly where she left in the previous dimension. This piece of literature is more intricate than average, yet I can confidently say that it reaches a wide range of audiences, especially 5th graders!

LAFS.1.SL.2.5 Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions when appropriate to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings. In this case, as educators, we can have our students create a visual that represents their understanding of the content.
UDL. (2.5) Illustrate through multiple media. This specific pattern of comics can be really helpful for students who feel inadequate and prefer using visual representation.

AndreaEfres LAFS.1.L.1.1 Conventions of Standard English. Even on picture books strategies for understanding punctuation are necessary for English language comprehension. This standard is great for having students focus on the written and oral language in a book.

UDL (6.1) Guide appropriate goal-setting. When students are given a goal project, in this case writing and reading a book to their teacher develop skills for becoming a long time learner.

As a strategy, I think each student can choose to be a bird depending on their mood of the day.

AndreaEfres The genre of this quality piece of literature would be poetry combined with comedy. A fourth-grade student would definitely choose this as an option.

LAFS.4.RL.2.5 Craft and Structure. In this poetry book, we interpret the elements of poems, drama, and prose as well as elements of drama.
UDL: Physical action. In a classroom, there should be an activity that contains humor.

UDL: Offer ways of customizing the display of information. This book contains about a couple of stories in between it's pages it isn't just one story.

UDL: Clarify vocabulary and symbols (2.1) Through the hearts we can count.
LAFS.K.RL.2.5 Recognize common types of texts (e.g, storybooks, poems) students can recognize how a letter is written.
MAFS1.OA.3.5 Relate counting to addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2).

DrSpalding Penguin- Random House is a wonderful publisher that supports teachers with wonderful resources! Good choice. Your universal design principle would work well with storytelling in addition to read aloud. You went the extra mile by adding standards however some information is missing or doesn‘t actually align with the appropriate grade level. This book would be appropriate in kindergarten or first grade but probably not beyond that. 3y
