This is such a lovely book. It‘s part memoir, but completely about our relationship to the land as human beings. It has a wonderful focus on how we don‘t have to be a negative influence on the land we live on and survive because of. It‘s not a win-lost proposition. It comes from both a scientific and an indigenous perspective, which unsurprisingly aren‘t always two different perspectives. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics I especially enjoyed the parts about the importance of keeping languages alive to keep cultures alive, as well as the parts about gratitude. People love to do “a month of gratitude” in November, but I‘ve never seen anyone doing that show any appropriation for the land they live on or the food they eat (which comes from the land). 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 3y

GingerAntics I would love to be able to take one of Dr. Kimmerer‘s classes. I enjoyed her reading on the audiobook, and I found myself stopping to take notes and marking things to go back and reread in the text later just to take it all in. She has not only points out the symbiotic relationship between people and the land that many westerners miss or never learned about, but also also that everything changes when nature is a who and not a what. 3y

GingerAntics @Traci1 it was a lovely read. Some of the stories of community and love made me tear up. Heads up on the one when she drops her younger daughter (she has two) at college. That one had me sobbing. Such a sweet book, and wonderful if you‘re a nature lover. 3y

I‘ve been to the kitchen. It‘s true. Beans have belly buttons… squash is an ovary… each individual kernel on a corn cob is also an ovary. Apparently we‘re all eating sex when we eat veggies.

How I wish people looked at the Bible this way instead of acting like it was written by a magical being and means the same thing for all of time. 🤦🏼‍♀️ (surprise! Homosexual in Ancient Rome meant a rich man having sex with a poor man...so clearly that doesn‘t mean the same thing today. Bigots.)

ValerieAndBooks I recently had this one from the library as an ebook hold but it expired before I was done. Think it‘d be better as a owned copy so I can take my time with it and not rush. Lots to contemplate. 3y

GingerAntics @ValerieAndBooks it really does. It‘s a lovely book, and I‘m really enjoying the different perspective on the world. I certainly would have been like her students with the good vs bad human interactions with the planet. I‘m hoping I‘d be able to come up with one or two positive interactions, but I certainly didn‘t learn them from modern western society. 3y
