Anyone else tuning into Canada Reads this week? I missed the start of the livestream, but it seemed like there were some high emotions and personal arguments today...

I didn‘t get a chance to read From The Ashes, and I DNF‘d Small Game Hunting, but I‘m still interested in the debate!

Photo from CBC Books Instagram. #CanadaReads #CanadaReads2020

MsMelissa I caught the final 15 minutes, but based on what I did see I might go back and watch the beginning. It was a little more intense than usual. I‘ve only read From the Ashes, and think it should win given its subject matter, but look forward to reading Son of a Trickster and We Have Always Been Here. The Hunting book doesn‘t appeal at all to me, nor does Radicalized, although I‘ll read the latter simply because I received a copy in a book subc. box. 4y
Shay I‘m not sure I‘ve ever seen things get so hot on day one! Usually they warm up a bit, but Amanda Bruegel did not come to play. 4y
candority @Book_Fiend_Melissa @Shay Definitely intense on the first and second day! Today‘s debate mellowed out a fair bit! I‘ll be interested to see which book takes the win tomorrow. 4y

Shay Based on how things went today I think We Have Always Been Here is going to take it. But you never know! 4y
candority @Shay I think so too. It seems to have resonated with all of the panelists. 4y
Shay A unanimous final vote (apart from the defender)! 4y
candority @Shay Yes! I‘m happy with the winner, but this year definitely seemed a bit off to me? 4y
Shay Son of a Trickster was my favourite but I also really enjoyed We Have Always Been Here and From the Ashes. I think the main thing that felt off was the delay and interrupting that came of having both Alayna and George competing remotely, when they couldn‘t see the rest of the panel. Hard to help the delay, but two-way video might have improved things. (edited) 4y
candority @Shay I actually didn‘t enjoy Son of a Trickster, but I still think it‘s an interesting and important book for people to read. I don‘t know why Alayna and George couldn‘t see the rest of the panel?! I feel like that would have definitely helped the flow of things. I also found that most of the panelists took things way too personally at times, which was frustrating! 4y

I was able to get and read 4 of the 5 books for #CanadaReads2020. I was very surprised to find that I like Radicalized, a collection of 4 short stories, the best. I don't usually care for short story anthologies. There wasn't anything cheerful in this year's reads.
@NataliePatalie

Prairiegirl_reading The cheerful ones rarely win anyway! I didn‘t read any of them this year. 🙁 4y

Sad but engaging book. I usually have mixed feelings about non-fiction, but this year my top two picks for #CanadaReads2020 happens to be the two non-fic books.

I had high hopes for this book, but honestly, I just found it terribly depressing. The end started to improve, but at that point it was too little, too late for me. I won't be continuing with the series. 2/5 ⭐️

This was my February #bookspin pick and is a contender for #CanadaReads #CanadaReads2020

TheAromaofBooks Sad you didn't like it (especially since I LOVE the cover!) but I don't have much patience for depressing books either! 4y
candority @TheAromaofBooks Normally I don‘t mind. But with this one, it was just too much. Looking forward to my next bookspin pick though! 4y

Book 4 for #CanadaReads2020. This is my pick for a winner. It has some really powerful messages. But it was a really hard read. I had to take more than a few breaks. The fact that Jesse Thistle even survived to share his story is extraordinary. This year's theme is, "One Book to Bring Canada Into Focus." This is the book every Canadian needs to read right now.

Buechersuechtling Thanks so much for your review. 🙇🏽‍♀️ This book to me now sounds soooo interesting‼️ 4y
Cinfhen Beautiful review! I will be looking to add it to my reading pile 💕and I‘m not Canadian 😉 4y

Can't believe I have two panned books in the #CanadaReads2020 series. I suspect this is one of those times where expectations influence opinions. The theme for Canada Reads this year is “one book to bring Canada into focus“, but this book is SO America-centric I just can't see it.

JacqMac It has not been a good year. I don‘t think I‘m going to even read this one. 4y

I‘m going on in. This is my last hope for a 5⭐️ read from #CanadaReads2020 It hasn‘t been the best stack this year.🤞

Geenie Sorry 😐. 4y
Blueberry I agree. But this was my favorite so far. Next to Radicalized. 4y

I‘m at 10% and I just can‘t anymore. I really wanted to like this one. But her writing style is so off putting. And there are too many characters without any connections. And no chapter breaks. I just can‘t find any reason to spend anymore time with it. I don‘t understand how it was chosen for both #CanadaReads2020 and shortlisted for the Giller. I mean even the title is horrible.

LiteraryinLawrence Yikes. Sounds rough. 4y
KatieB I felt exactly the same way! 4y
LaraS Ugh, that's not reassuring. I struggled through most of Son of a Trickster and Radicalized is sooooo America-centric. Not sure it's a great crop of books this year. 4y

JacqMac @LiteraryinLititz It‘s a hot mess. 4y
JacqMac @KatieB I‘m glad it wasn‘t just me. 4y
JacqMac @LaraS I struggled with that one, too. And I don‘t have much interest in Radicalized. I did like We Have Always Been Here, but it could have been better. I agree, it‘s not such a great year. 4y
