Green Mountain Farm | Elliott Merrick
post image
Pickpick

I finished this months ago but wanted it to linger in my mind. Merrick and his wife moved from the Arctic Circle to the Northeast Kingdom in Vermont in the 1930‘s. While this photo is of a VT farm, it is definitely not Merrick‘s. In an old homestead, they start their family. I loved reading his stories of that time, where the ice on the lake was 3 feet deep (not anymore!), neighbors were crucial, and the snow was difficult to navigate. 🔽

Suet624 One of the chapters he writes is about canoeing with his wife on Lake Champlain and camping on an island overnight. The chapter captures the beauty of the lake so beautifully and it's clear he is deeply in love with it. Another chapter talks about driving in the winter to the movies 18 miles away with the top off the vehicle (they were Arctic adventurers). When they came out of the theatre it had snowed and the car was filled with it. 12mo
sisilia Stacked! I read The Farm in the Green Mountain and I googled VT landscapes like crazy. It‘s so beautiful over there… looks peaceful, too! 12mo
Suet624 @sisilia I read that book too and really liked it. Merrick's time in Vermont was prior to WWII. Zuckmayer's book was during the war. Merrick and his wife has several books about their travel adventures and I'd love to find them. Vermont is very special. Even though I'm biased, Vermont is really beautiful and peaceful. Lakes large and small, mountains, pastures, you name it. I feel quite fortunate to be here. 12mo
Cathythoughts Vermont sounds beautiful indeed. ♥️ 12mo

My Aura picture frame is reminding me that summer isn‘t that far away. Vermont winters have changed since Merrick wrote the tagged book in the late 1930‘s. It‘s been a joy to read of his experience living here back then.

Tamra Hard to imagine in February, but there is hope for color! 13mo
JenniferP I really enjoyed that book! 13mo
Suet624 @Tamra just gotta believe. 🤣🤣 this winter has been pretty easy to live through. Not super cold. But it‘s also super scary to see how much warmer it is and how little snow we‘ve received in comparison to years past. 13mo

Suet624 @JenniferP oh! I‘m so happy to see someone on Litsy has read it. Some of the chapters are so beautiful. 13mo
Tamra @Suet624 what I‘ve noticed is the extreme swings and abrupt shifts. We‘re getting odd periods of rain Dec-Feb. Last year we had no spring to speak of - suddenly in May/June it was summer. 13mo
Suet624 @Tamra yes! It‘s so unsettling. 13mo

Guys, this book is raw. A love story to her man, their family, their desire for the farm life in a small town. Hilarie is wonderful with words and you want to celebrate with her, laugh, grieve, and drop everything to make each recipe she shares. I want to try Dandelion Wine and pickled tomatoes! There is some entertainment industry content but mostly its life, and death, and real. I hope you have time to enjoy Mischief Farm as much as I did.

JamieArc I have the audiobook on hold. Really looking forward to it! 4y
Christine Your tomatoes look great! 🍅 ❤️ 4y
MaggieCarr @Christine it's my 5 year old's garden LOL totally just used it for the photo after he went to bed. I cam take zero credit. He waters it in his pjs each morning and puts eggs shells in it. He's very proud. ♡ 4y
Christine That is so precious!! 4y

Wasn‘t she on Salons Table Talk? You know- in the last century.
Very enjoyable book in the city mouse moves to the country genre. #Deweysreadathon

I dipped into this book this morning. I had a country childhood, but my wilds now are the tree in our suburban front yard. #riotgrams #booksinthewild
