Book #40
4.5/5
This YA read is surprisingly insightful and wrll-written. It is written from the POV of a young girl who lives with her 3 younger siblings, her mom, and her youngest sibling's dad. There are themes of domestic abuse, poverty, and parentification (if you don't know, Google it - it's a thing).

Kris10H My only complaint is that I think it could have gone even farther with the characters and storyline - but then I guess it might not be suitable for the YA audience. 1y

Twice as Perfect | Louisa Onome

Twice as Perfect by Louisa Onome is a lovely YA novel that deals with social issues. The story revolves around Adanna, a Nigerian Canadian teenager dealing with a lot of issues. Not only is she dealing with school and the debate team, she's also having problems with her family. Her cousin is planning a big Nigerian wedding, and Adanna has to help them out. Can Adanna deal with all of these issues from school, family, and even her love life?

An interesting update to Pride & Prejudice, especially within the debate world. Lots of info on debating that I never knew! However, Leela was a bit too much for me and I wasn‘t really rooting for her.

For me, there were a couple of moments where it felt like the author's need to allude to classic lit affected the language to the point where it drew me out of the story, but overall, I loved this book! Leela and Darcy had that pull, and all the updates were so clever and fun. And the forensics stuff was fascinating! #yalit #yaromance

Profoundly beautiful! 😍

This book broke my heart, but it's such a great read. It was listed as a middle grade at my library, but readers of all ages can appreciate this one.

I don't want to say too much, but if you're a fan of Renee Watson, Jason Reynolds, or Jacqueline Woodson, you'll love this one too.
