I just answered a question on Jeopardy about The Jungle and classified it among my top three most disturbing reads. And of course that got me wondering...what are other Littens most disturbing reads? #disturbingreads #LitsyAfterDark

Erinreadsthebooks I read The Jungle in high school and Bastard in college. Definitely not feel good reads 😨 6y
Kaye I must like disturbing reads because #1 and 3 are some of my favorites. 😱 6y

Leftcoastzen I‘m with @kaye disturbing but among my favorites! All three! The Jungle radicalized me at a young age. 6y
cathysaid @Owlizabeth So would you suggest reading it or is it stuff nightmares are made of? Clearly I‘m drawn to disturbing. 🧐 6y
cathysaid @Erinreadsthebooks That was the same timing for me as well! I often wonder if that timing affected the impact. 6y
cathysaid @kaye @Leftcoastzen I can‘t say any are “favorites” but I also don‘t regret reading them. If they affected me so profoundly, then I feel the authors were successful. I think part of my issues are with my respective ages when I read them, but also I think I simultaneously identified in some way while also being repulsed. I just know there are scenes and descriptions in all three which I‘ll never forget. 😞 6y
Leftcoastzen I agree 6y
Reagan Bastard Out of Carolina 😢 I gave it away after I read it and then I was so mad because it‘s a book I need to own. I‘ve never read The Jungle 😬 (edited) 6y
cathysaid @Reagan-reads I suggest The Jungle if you are starting a fasting diet or would like to lose twenty pounds within three days. It‘s my understanding that the formation of the USDA was heavily influenced by the novel. 6y
BarbaraBB I haven‘t read any of them and now they sound appealing. What does that say about me 😳😉? I definitely think the age you read them is important. My most disturbing read I read in high school too. It is 6y
cathysaid @BarbaraBB Ok that description sounds like it could seriously mess with the adolescent mind! And while I found the ones I mention disturbing, I still think they are worth the read. Just know I preface that suggestion with a myriad of trigger warnings = animal cruelty, graphic violence, molestation, rape, sexual assault...and those aren‘t all. 6y
BarbaraBB The Jungle is on the list of #1001books so I‘ll get to that one sooner or later. Bastard has been on my mind for a while too! 6y
mrp27 100% agree with your number 1 pick. It's mine as well. The only book I have physically thrown against the wall. 6y
