⭐️⭐️⭐️ I thought this was an entertaining folk-ghost creepy seaside story. Not amazing, but not bad either. I haven‘t read much Stephen King, but it struck me as being in that realm of books.

3/5. It took about 130 pages in for the story to take off. From there the book flows nicely. The chapters are short and each gives the view of a different character. I felt this worked against the book as it was hard to feel connected to any one character.
I loved the premise of the story, but felt the story lingered on trivial matters too much. If that had been the focus, it would've been a edge-of-your-seat, 5/5 book.

ReadingEnvy So listen. Every time I pass your user name I start laughing. Are you robot hugs or robo thugs? 7y
Robothugs 😂 I'm glad it brings joy. You should see my email address... I specifically put it on things so I can watch (or if it's the phone, listen) people try not to smile or laugh. Anyway! It's meant to be both! Whichever strikes your fancy in the moment. 😏 @ReadingEnvy (edited) 7y

I loved this passage, though it's a bit colorful (the character is brash). I always take issue with magazine covers (photos = 🤥) and the unrealistic expectations place upon women, especially young girls who look up to women on them and think that's what they really look like.

Something strange is happening in the seaside town of Bareneed. Mythical creatures are being pulled from the sea, perfectly preserved corpses of long-lost villagers are washing up on the shore, and the residents of the town are suddenly overcome by a mysterious illness that is making them forget how to breathe.

Mehso-so

Despite what the cover says, it didn't read as "gothic" or "horror" and it definitely didn't read like Lovecraft. It was hard to connect with the main characters; Many of them weren't well developed and Joseph was really obnoxious. A lot of things (the giant machines the army brought in?) were never explained but the message was definitely hammered in. Some creepy moments, some fun elements with the folklore and whatnot, but overall not so good.
