This whole chapter has made me think of my mum & the shit I put her through during my rebel phase. Mothers are amazing people, and books with beautifully heart-wrenching prose like this one, can bring such feelings of gratitude and awe to life in unexpectedly engrossing ways!! 💜 I apologise for the quote spamming. It's 1957 in Shanghai after the Liberation in China. The Paris of Asia has completely transformed!! I don't know much about the current state of affairs in China, but I get terrifying chills when I think about the transformation it underwent as Communism took root. This was life 60ish years ago... My mind is blown in such a painful way...

Holy shit, first three pages of the book!! Also, this is so relevant today, almost 40-50 years later, that my heart just fucking bleeds and sobs. Changes were made, but in the end we're all back to this painful reality in 2017. History is supposed to be a lesson, not an itinerary.

I've been feeling the itch of a reading slump creeping up on me. I'm hoping to defeat it before it can do much damage. This will be the first book that I'm looking to tackle for Feb.!! It's the sequel to Shanghai Girls, which was a phenomenal story about family, culture, & what it means to be an immigrant during the rise of Communism in China.
