I enjoyed this book very much. But lately I‘ve been listening to a number of books in which the protagonist feels like something they‘ve done has caused catastrophic events. “It‘s all because of me.” In Binti‘s case her family and friends believe so too. Binti is brave, proud, and ambitious. The ambition is what makes her family so angry and resentful. They call her selfish. It‘s the distant future, and her people still believe (cont)⬇️

For me this suffered from middle book in the trilogy syndrome. It wasn‘t helped by the fact I started it on audio and had to switch to print when I realized I was losing focus. I loved Binti returning home after all of these experiences that have changed her so much. I wanted more of her with her family. However there is no way, after an ending like that on, that I could possibly pass on the next book.Light pick #authoramonth

This is the second book in the series and it takes place a year after the first book. Binti wants to go home but is faced with finding out who she and her family really are while facing difficulties of prejudices and gender roles. This was a good book but there were parts that I found myself zoning out. However, I do want to read the 3rd book. 3.5 ⭐️

I‘ve bailed on the last 3 books I‘ve picked up (it‘s not you books, it‘s me) so I jumped to the second book in the Binti series knowing it would be short, engaging and thoughtful. It was! The Binti series is amazing for imagining a future universe with space travel and alien interaction but also probing the mystery/foreigness that other cultures on earth remain to each other.⬇️

I thought I loved the first cover design. I love this one even more. In this one Binti goes back home after her first semester at university. She brings a friend. 🐙

Reading the second story ‘Home‘ was my #bookspin pick for January. That story felt more like set up for the final story (which I‘m in the middle of right now).

I immensely enjoyed the first story. It‘s sci-if, but deals with so many other issues than just murderous aliens. Extremely creative and well crafted! I look forward to finishing the trilogy!

I‘m a bigger fan of the Akata Witch series, probably because I prefer fantasy over science fiction. However, I do love the characters and world building in this series, and the storyline definitely took a turn I was not expecting.

I am super loving Binit and getting to see more and more of her world. It's deep and vibrant and wonderful.

Poor Binti - Born to be a peacemaker (Harmonizer) she wants to please her family, yet she can't control the events that happen around her. It all seems out of her control while she is learning about her ancestors and the power that was bequeathed to her. A fascinating world building by Okorafor with hints of her Nigerian heritage. Can't wait to read book 3.

I spent the first half of the book feeling meh, SFF really isn‘t my ‘thing‘ and loving Binti must have been a blip. Then the second half was not long enough (I know!) - I wanted to spend much more time in the desert, and may have to get book 3 sooner rather than later.

So hmm. I guess I‘m more interested in Binti working out who she‘s becoming and the world‘s she‘s connected to than the conflicty bits.

Also, this definitely isn‘t a standalone.

Having spent a year at Oomza Uni, Binti is feeling more out of sorts than ever, she asks for leave for herself and Okwu, her Meduse friend as an ambassador for their people to earth and her home.
Another excellent instalment in the Binti Trilogy that truly wowed me.
Full of far distant sci fi elements and the same prejudices we are dealing with today.

Excited to read this, although it‘s been a while since I read the first novella, so I hope I can follow the plot.

After a year at Oomza Uni, Binti returns to earth. She feels isolated from her people and hopes to reconnect with family and friends, but things don't go as planned. This is the second installment in the trilogy and I'm looking forward to listening to the last. The narrator on these is excellent.

After finishing the first book in the series I was looking forward to this second one and it didn't disappoint, in fact I liked it more than the first one. This time the story happens on Earth not in space like the first book but this made it even better for me, the mystery and revelations being more enjoyable for me. Definitely a pick, I will start the third book soon.

This is the 2nd installment in the Binti trilogy. I loved the first one-just gobbled it right up. I had a little trouble with this one though. I think my issue is that I did this on audiobook. I struggled with Akata Witch too on audio. I think some authors/books are harder for me to consume through my ears vs my eyes. Not sure if that makes any sense but I‘m sticking with it. Still overall a pick.

my time not spent on schoolwork or working from home stuff is spent on video games and reading, to the surprise of no one. I read the first Binti novella 3 years ago and never got back to them til my partner bought the trilogy collection. thank goodness for wikipedia summaries bringing me up to speed.

I loved the first book. This one was just so-so. It was a quick read.

I read this one aloud on the way home from my road trip. (I didn't have wifi so am posting all my trip books today). This was another fun reread for me. I love Binti and the complex coming or age issues she faces - becoming part jellyfish, have alien DNA activated in her - you know, the usual stuff. 😂 Looking forward to book three!

Next up in road trip read along. I'm enjoying these books out loud with pals even more than when I read them on my own!

Happy First Day of Book Fitness Challenge Round 3!

I have just finished this awesome book! Binti Home which is the second book in the Binti Series by Nnedi Okorafor. This book focuses on a home coming for Binti and her difficulties dealing with her many identities.

Binti in this book is learning a lot about who she is and where she comes frok and what tbat will mean for her future and her path. Excellent story. Loved listening to it.

This was a powerful read, Binti is an interesting character and her problems feel like things that come from her upbringing and what has happened to her, she's starting to be a bit less passive about what's going on with her and it will be interesting to see where this is going to take her.and how she is going to deal with what has happened to her family.
I want to write half as well as Nnedi does.

It seemed like Okorafor asked herself, "What do SFF books need so they're not superficial?" And then made a checklist & checked off the boxes as she wrote. "PTSD? Check. Transfolk? Check. Break down stereotypes? Check." Binti is the only character who isn't static, and everyone keeps forcing her to change, rather than it being her choice, so its not a show of her character. By the end I didn't care anymore, even with the cool world building.

Oh this is so true. So spot on.

I really enjoyed following Binti's story as she returns home after a year at university. She has to grapple with her identity and her relationship with her family and friends, and how these have changed as she has gone out into the world.

While I really enjoyed this novella, it did feel like it dealt a bit less with sweeping themes and focused more on one individual coming of age story.

Binti heads home bringing an alien being in an attempt to bring harmony among different species. When she returns she must confront how she is now different from her community and take a deeper look at her family‘s history. Ends on a big cliffhanger. Still not a sci-fi person but I‘ve enjoyed the first two books of this trilogy.

I don‘t say this often/never, but I really want a screen adaptation for this trilogy.

For whatever reason, I had expected this one to be more of a standalone story, the way that the first BINTI novella was. It‘s definitely the middle act of a trilogy, though. I liked it as much as the first one, and I‘m curious to see how it all ends up.

Next

I moved right into the second Binti book right after finishing the first, and I was pleased that it‘s twice as long and more fleshed out, dealing with a few threads I felt were dropped in the first. I still wanted more of Oomza Uni (it‘s the setting I‘m most fascinated by and yet see the littlest of). But I loved seeing Binti come home and work through how she‘s changed since she left—as well as integrate other pieces of her heritage and her past.

Finished 5 books on vacation, which was my plan, do anything else is extra joy and relaxation.

So much world building in a slim novella. In seeking a ritual rite in her tribe, Binti discovers much she did not know of her home and has to confront her own bias in a way that hasn't been challenged before. Okorafor blends these worlds so well; we see Binti so cosmopolitan at Uni speaking to people that look like literal bugs contrast against her distaste of the savage 'Desert People' who live on the outskirts of her home village.

I really love this series. As soon as I start entering this world I‘m enthralled and wanting to know more. It‘s the sort of book that reminds me that I love sci fi when it‘s done well! Can I please see this as a tv series? Pretty please? #readingwomen2019 #readharder2019 #readblackwomen

There's so much to process from Book 2! 😯 I'm loving the cultural struggles and complexity of the worlds Okorafor has built. I'm looking forward to seeing how she ties it all together in Book 3!

Had a hard time getting back into this world, as I‘d read the first part months ago and some of the concepts/vocabulary wasn‘t re-explained. If I had it to do over, I‘d read them back to back.

If you do not want to challenge your presumptions/prejudice of yourself and your family, do not read this book. If you want to read a story about a woman‘s journey of self discovery by returning to the familiar with the purpose to challenge what was previously viewed as ‘correct‘ to discover truth, read this book.

I finished Binti: Home while driving from a meeting today. I'm still not sure what I thought of it. I was enjoying it, but I feel like it ended too abruptly.

And whether it is from the book or just my hectic workday, I certainly am exhausted tonight. 😴

Hello Litsy friends. I know, it's been too long, but I'm still kicking, and reading. Work has just been...well, let's just say I don't think I had any real idea what I was walking into when I accepted this job. It's been rocky at times, but I've stuck with it. I'm still working on finding a balance, though.

Audiobooks have saved my sanity, to some degree, especially when traveling. Currently enjoying Binti: Home.
