I had to finish reading Wolf Hall before I started this one, so I wouldn‘t get my Henries mixed up 😆

I didn‘t know much about Eleanor of Aquitaine going into this, but now I realize why E.L. Konigsburg found her so fascinating. Headstrong, determined, wife to two major figures of her time, mother of Richard the Lionheart and the infamous King John—and with a finger in a LOT of different political pies! The narrative frame here felt a bit odd:⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) …Eleanor and three of her contemporaries are waiting for Henry II‘s arrival in Heaven, and as they wait, each one recounts a chapter of Eleanor‘s life. That setup felt contrived—especially when Lincoln and Churchill randomly show up at the end! I prefer Konigsburg‘s books with contemporary settings, but still really appreciate the way this children‘s book from the 1970s brings a strong female historical figure to life. 7mo
BarbaraJean This was my 1973 pick for the #192025 challenge. 🎉 (edited) 7mo
TrishB I‘d recommend Sharon Penman‘s and Elizabeth Chadwick‘s books on Eleanor if you want to read more! 7mo
BarbaraJean @TrishB Thanks for the recommendation—I‘ll take a look at those! 7mo

This has taken me three weeks - it felt like a real chunkster and at times a real slog. As ever with Penman the research is fabulous and the characters including the often forgotten women jumping the page, alive and vibrant. This is the 4th in her quintet about Henry, Elinor and their children and most is based around Richard‘s crusade and it is a little too battley for me! Did enjoy my last chapters and cocktail though

Bookwomble ❓🍸❓ Enquiring minds want to know! 🧐 7mo
Itchyfeetreader @Leftcoastzen @Bookwomble it was delicious but one where one was enough. It was a Bakewell daiquiri - rum, cherry syrup, lime and amaretto! 7mo

TrishB Richard was very battley! 7mo
Itchyfeetreader @TrishB he certainly was - at over 800 pages I will be pausing before reading the 5th novel in the series 7mo

The best book for February is Some People Need Killing by Patricia Evangelista, but Matrix is using a bonus space, as it was very close between them.

Overall, it's a good read, though there's no strong plot. You follow Marie as she morphs from unwanted orphan to powerful abbess. I wish we had more of her life as a crusader.

My favorite part about this book are the snarky side comments from the author about the environment and feminist topics. It's really very good.

This book was unlike anything I've read before, and through much of it, I wasn't sure if it would be a pick for me or not. But it kept me coming back, and there were moments of greatness. This was my first Lauren Groff, and I read it for my February ##AuthorAMonth @Soubhiville

Soubhiville Glad you liked it. 🙂 9mo
Lesliereadsalot I‘ve loved all her books! 9mo
Caryl I felt similarly. The way she told the story was challenging for me at first, but once I got used to it, it felt just right for the time period and characters. I ended up loving it. 9mo
